Think About It

The Passions We Live By
by Pastor B.J. Knefley

Regardless of who we are, we are passionate about something. It might be scrapbooking, hunting, NASCAR, football or anything else under the sun. Passions are what we live for. They fuel our actions, behavior and even our relationships. They can be positive or negative depending upon a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most important question is not about what your passions are but rather if your life is ruled by your passions.

Black Friday brings out the best and worst of people. Some live for that day, planning their strategy like a deer hunter scouts out his or her deer. Passionate about finding the best bargain they set their clock as if it where the night before deer season. Up and out of the house like the deer hunter heading for the tree stand, they swoop down upon the Malls and department stores hoping that they will be one of the first through the doors. Perhaps neither of these examples causes a stir. Maybe your passion finds you sitting in a football stadium or at a NASCAR race listening to the roar of the engines as they race around the track. If these don’t trigger a response then maybe it’s something more subdued like sitting quietly reading a book, or relaxing watching your favorite television program. Whatever the case, no one is immune to the influence of at least one passion in their life. Having passion is not negative except when the passion is running our life.

As important as having passion is, when we allow our passions to dictate our behavior we become enslaved. To use the excuse, “That’s just the way I am”, is to minimize its influence and power. Jesus simply said, “Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be”, (Matthew 6:21). Our passions can motivate us to do some very wonderful things. However passions left unchecked and uncontrolled can actually become enslaving. The question we all must ask ourselves is where do our passions us, free or enslaved. Think about it.
