Taxes to increase for McKean County taxpayers

By ALEX DAVIS Era Reporter
Bradford Era

SMETHPORT — McKean County property owners will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets next year, with taxes slated to increase by 0.75 mills.

But before the county commissioners unanimously passed the $36.7 million spending plan and a 10-mill tax rate on Tuesday morning, two area residents questioned the rise in expenses for 2016.

For a home assessed at $50,000, individuals will see taxes increase by $37.50 a year. Read more...

I wish I could have attended this meeting. I wonder if the commissioners don't know how to say NO???? When so many of the taxpayers who pay the salaries of these workers have been layed off or work for companies who have shut down I don't think they should be raising taxes to raise their salaries. If they want more money go someplace else. They should be glad the have a job. Maybe its time for the bosses to start showing up to work and stop hiring people to do their jobs!! Maybe somebody should look into these departments and get rid of the dead weight.

You can thank the "New Directions" team for changing the predetermined ratio when they were in office. Prior to that regime the millage was capped out and could only be raised by the judge. Changing this to 100% has given a blank to future commissioners to raise county taxes at will, and guess what - they have.
Never hear of cutting, reducing, getting more efficient, etc - its always we need more $$.
Nice xmas present from our elected leaders.
I say Bah Humbug!!!

Yet they can never find a way to lower my taxes. There is always sober reasoning why they need to increase. There couldn't possibly be any waste in the county budget. Nope not one bit.....or at least not one bit that wouldn't require sticking their necks out and having to make hard decisions.

It's amazing what a rural County can spend.

At a time when our entire economy is in the tank, more and more people are out of work, and the cost of everything is skyrocketing, McKean County once again, imposes a tax increase on us. How about proposing cut-backs? Layoffs? Increase county employees' contribution to their health care plan? Nope...! Increasing taxes seems to be their answer to everything. No different than our State and Federal government. Pitiful!

Property taxes are fundamentally immoral. A man can spend his life building a home with his two hands, and the more he sweats, the more he owes.

In fact, a man could build himself into oblivion. If you invested a small portion of your salary and time each week to improve your "castle", at some point your taxes will outweigh your ability to pay them and the government will take all that you built with your two hands.

Your life's work.

You do not own property in America; you buy the right to lease it from the government.

We are all under the delusion we are free. We are anything but. We are all slaves to the Corporation of America.

Not only do taxpayers feel the sting, it has a trickle down effect to renters also. As a landlord, specifically a landlord in the city of Bradford, expenses just keep going up not only in taxes but utilities and "storm water fees". In turn, I have to pass it on to remain above water. I hate doing it. Some of these people are just getting by as it is. When is it going to end?

Maybe the commissioners need to take a pay cut for starters. Their paid is way to much seeing their job classification is part time. Second, they need to get off their asses and bring industry into the county and create jobs instead is sitting on their hands. They gave away the old furniture plant over in Eldred, so a antique fire truck collector can put his trucks on display. If one looks at their budget a bit closer you will find out this tax increase is going to fund county departments that seem to need more than one person to run them, which intern creates positions that are not needed in government. Lastly, maybe someone should ask them why they hire a lawyer to do the bargaining for them when it comes to dealing with the counties bargaining units. They throw away tens of thousand of taxpayers dollars each time because they are to lazy to do it themselves. The list is long and I am running out of letters!

It's time for our elected officials to start paying attention to the individual departments. Look around Smethport every morning at 8:30 when it's time for Courthouse employees to be at work. Many are just driving into town or stopping for donuts and coffee.
Commissioner's sold Sena Kean at a discounted price for a quick fix! Must be that money is all gone so it's time to raise taxes again! Let's hope our new Commissioner coming in will start making some changes. I feel she's the woman for the job and won't become a "yes man"!

I think it is time to run the county like a business, lay a few people off. Make the bigwigs drive their own cars to and from work. There are a lot of ways to save money. Let these people be accountable. It's obvious the incumbents aren't planning on running again. Stop in some day and see how many people are actually working.

I and many others have moved from the Bradford area for these reasons. Only to be replaced by the non-working, too lazy to work, waste of life, Cig smoking, pill popping, over breeding, mix race class of people. Keep letting more state assisted drug addicts in the county, more public services needed for them, more overweight, lazy, undeserving punks operating the Mckean county courthouse. I relocated myself and business to Warren county. Way cleaner, and actually proud to say I am a resident of Warren county.

This is sad for the elderly that live on a fix income and 9:44 says it all,
We, the hard working ppl, the middle class, the elderly pay for it all
