Step Back In Time Sunday At History Museum
Potter County Today
Many
prominent Potter County citizens proudly posed for formal portraits
painted by a world-class artist who just happened to reside in
Coudersport. Cyrenius Stilson Jones, who lived in Potter County 1847
until his passing in 1885, has left behind a treasure trove of paintings
spread across a wide area. Many have been lost.
But four of them reside
in the museum of the Potter County Historical Society, so it’s only
fitting that a public viewing of his works and discussion of his life –
and his subjects’ lives – will be held at the museum at 2 pm on Sunday, July 26.
A brief meeting of the Historical Society will precede the afternoon’s
program. Two other portraits by Jones that are on-loan to the museum
will be displayed, as will photographs showing some of his other works.
He was a prolific artist, painting numerous signs for downtown
businesses. The public is encouraged to attend the program and learn
more about these chapters of Potter County history. Jones painted this
portrait of attorney John S. Mann, which is on display at the museum of
the Potter County Historical Society. Mann was a vocal abolitionist
whose home served as an important station for the Underground Railroad.
Elected to the state legislature in 1865, and a delegate to the
Constitutional Convention in 1872, Mann introduced the Prohibitory Law
of 1869. It was intended solely for Potter County, prohibiting the sale
of alcoholic beverages and issuance of liquor licenses until it was
repealed in 1900.

Major Initiative Offers Job Training, College Credits
Potter County TodayResidents
in Potter and eight other northwestern Pennsylvania counties will be
able to earn two-year college degrees or receive other specialized
training and education through the Rural Regional Community College. It
has been more than three years in the making, according to Sen. Joseph
Scarnati, who shepherded enabling legislation through the State Senate.
Rep. Martin Causer was a champion of the bill in the State House of
Representatives. A 15-member board of trustees is meeting regularly to
direct the community college’s development and administration, in
consultation with local educators, industrial leaders and business
owners. Goal is to tailor curriculum to the needs of employers in the
region.
Local residents, including high school students, will also be
able to earn college credits that can be transferred to a four-year
university at a fraction of their on-campus cost. Representing Potter
County on the board are Commissioner Doug Morley (left) and Ed Pitchford
(right), chief executive officer of Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.
It’s part of a broader effort, coordinated locally by the Potter
County Education Council and the Potter County Commissioners, to give
local job-seekers the skills and training they need to secure local
jobs. Former Oswayo Valley School Superintendent Bob Wicker has been
spearheading that initiative. He has been meeting with local employers
large and small to assess their needs and craft training programs that
prepare local residents to fill their jobs. Contrary to popular belief,
Wicker said, many Potter County employers have job openings and others
would be willing to hire locally if they could find qualified
applicants.
A recent economic/employment profile of Potter, Cameron and five
other counties reinforced the point. Susan Snelick, executive director
of the North Central Workforce Investment Board, said the study showed
that employers are frustrated by the lack of qualified job applicants.
Employee turnover is a chronic problem. Many lack basic educational
qualifications and skills. Absenteeism, tardiness and an inability to
stay drug-free are chronic problems, Snelick noted. Many of the jobless
who possess skills and work ethic do not apply for work because they’re
getting by on unemployment compensation benefits.
The 100-page Workforce Investment Area Five-Year Plan was compiled to
better direct government resources to address the economic and social
challenges. It found that manufacturing jobs have been declining and are
expected to fall even more. Decreases are also expected in the
information sector, company management, government, retail, agriculture
and utilities. Employment opportunities will grow in the oil and gas
industries, finance, administrative support, waste management, real
estate, tourism, health care and social assistance. Some 8.7 percent of
the region’s adults hold bachelor degrees, compared to 16.1 percent
statewide. It’s estimated that 63 percent of local jobs will require at
least some college education by 2018.

BANK ROBBERY IN ELKLAND
BANK ROBBERY IN ELKLAND
On Saturday, July 25, 2015, FIRST News Now received word that Citizens & Northern Bank in Elkland was locked down during the normal morning business hours due to a robbery.
FNN placed a call to the State Police Barracks in Mansfield to try and confirm the report of a possible robbery. State police simply stated that Elkland Borough Police would be handling this.
Elkland police has not responded to FNN's request for information at this time.
It has been said that there may be one in custody at this time, but again this story has not been confirmed by Elkland Borough Police or the bank branch.
As with any breaking news, details and information may not be available or 100% correct.
At this time there is very little information available as it is suspected that police are investigating.
If you have information please post a "Private Message" as to not compromise police investigation.

John F. "Mickey" McManigle, 89, of 166 West Fourth Street, Emporium, PA
![]() |
John F. "Mickey" McManigle |
Mickey was born August 9, 1925 at the family home on West 6th Street, Emporium, PA. He was the second of eight children of the late John F. and Mariam Cooper McManigle. He was a life long Emporium resident who cherished his family and friends.
In 1945 he met Doris Pollard, a young waitress at the Cabin Kitchen. Doris became the love of his life and on April 1, 1950 they were married in the First Presbyterian Church, Emporium. They often joked that they married on April Fool’s day . . . just in case. They celebrated their 58th anniversary prior to her passing in 2008.
![]() |
Korean War Veteran |
Mickey graduated from Emporium High School in 1943. He served with the US Army during the Korean War.
Mickey worked at Sylvania for over 42 years as a journeyman (master) tool and die maker. He took great pride in building machines used in the production of picture tubes and other Sylvania products during the height of Sylvania’s popularity.
He worked as manager & president at Emporium Water Company. One of his proudest achievements was overseeing the design and construction of the filtration plant. For over 25 years he also served as the president of Cameron Land Development.
Mickey & Doris were charter members of the Emporium Country Club. Mickey was proud of Doris’s achievements, including 19 Club Championships, and was always eager to regale family and friends with the story of his own ‘march’ to the 1965 Fourth Flight Championship!
Mickey & Doris were winter residents of Cape Canaveral, Florida for over 25 years. They lived in the Villages of Seaport where they became life long friends with fellow ‘snow birds’ from around the United States and Canada. Mickey & Doris often shared how significantly these relationships enriched their lives. Mickey particularly enjoyed the daily 3-mile walk around the jetty and evening ‘happy hour’ with friends. In addition, Mickey was an ardent supporter of Cocoa Beach high school basketball, highlighted by travelling to a Cocoa playoff game on the team charter!
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Emporium where he served as Trustee, Deacon & Financial Secretary. He was also an active member of the Cape Canaveral Christ Lutheran Church for over 20 years.
Mickey was a life member of the American Legion Olkosky-Jessop Post 194, a 50-year member of the Emporium Lodge #382, F.and A.M. & the Coudersport Consistory, and member of the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368. Mickey was an avid outdoorsman and member of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club. He was also a member of the Cameron County Historical Society.
