The Grand Prize Winner of the 25 Days of Christmas raffle was Tammy Emerson of Port Allegany. Tammy was the winner of the $1,000. Congratulations to Tammy and we want to Thank Everyone that bought tickets or donated prizes for our yearly raffle. Bradford Man Escapes Fire Christmas Morning
Bradford Fire Dept. photos submitted by Jay Bradish |
By Anne Holliday
WESB Local News
A Bradford man was hurt and lost his home in a fire early on Christmas morning.
Firefighters were called to the Miller Street home of Alex Nemeth at about 7:30 a.m. and found smoke coming from the first and second floors as well as the eaves, and fire in the first floor windows.
Nemeth was asleep in a second floor bedroom when the smell of smoke woke him up. He left the house and called 911. He suffered smoke inhalation and, after being evaluated on the scene by fire department personnel, was taken to BRMC for further evaluation and treatment. The Red Cross is assisting him.
Firefighter Andy Eliason was hit in the helmet by an axe during overhaul operations, but did not need medical evaluation and remained on duty.
State Police Fire Marshal David Powell says the blaze started in the area behind what was left of the TV and entertainment center. He says the cause was an electrical failure in a power strip providing power to the TV, DVD player and VCR. Powell adds that because the fire was put out so quickly, fire damage was limited to the living room and stairwell, but smoke and heat damage were seen throughout the first and second floor. Damage is estimated at $75,000. The house was insured.
All off-duty personnel were called in, Bradford Township firefighters were on stand-by at the Central Fire Station, and the Bradford Regional Rapid Respond Team was called to the scene. The fire was under control at about 8:30 a.m.

Think About It
The Last Days
by Pastor B.J. Knefley
What is Christmas? How do you answer that question? To some it’s a holiday; to others it signifies the birth of Jesus Christ; and to some, it is just a day, a date on the calendar. I’ve wondered if its significance has changed over the years as society has become more secularized. Ultimately the significance of Christmas is greatly influenced by ones core belief about Jesus Christ.
Many that celebrate Christmas do so without celebrating Jesus Christ. For them the two things are separate. Part of the way we know this is that we have changed the word Christmas to Holiday. Instead of Merry Christmas it’s Happy Holiday. I don’t fault society for this, in fact I believe that it’s to be expected as the secularization continues and God is removed from society. As a Christian I don’t believe that I should be alarmed by this shift in society because it’s what to be expected in the last days.
The Bible has many references to what to expect in the last days. Paul, in one of his letters to Timothy said, “You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!” (2 Tim 3:105). I don’t believe that there would be many who would dispute that what Paul was warning Timothy about isn’t going on in our present day.
Christians also understand that the last days will usher in the return of Jesus Christ. So as we celebrate his birth, (Christmas), and his death and resurrection, (Easter), we look forward to his return, (last days). Think about it.
