DCNR Committed to Restoring Denton Hill

COUDERSPORT, PA - Over 150 attendees heard from Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) officials regarding the future of Denton Hill State Park at a public meeting held in Potter County on January 20.

Although the process will take some time, the message was clear that DCNR supports the revitalization and long-term sustainability of Denton Hill State Park and its ski operations.

The results of a feasibility study funded by DCNR and conducted by consultant Moshier Studio of Pittsburgh showed that, due mainly to outdated infrastructure, a $12.5 million investment would be required to return basic ski operations to industry standards.

Denton Hill State Park is one of 29 state parks located within the Pennsylvania Wilds region. The park was opened as a downhill ski area in 1958, but was closed in November 2014 when the private operator determined it was no longer able to continue the concession.

Despite the projected cost, DCNR officials confirmed that Denton Hill is a top priority. The numbers and concepts presented at the meeting represent the results of the feasibility study and were not reflective of a more detailed, master site plan, the next step in the process.

The public will have an opportunity to participate in that process. DCNR will be posting the complete feasibility study on its website once it is finalized.

Hey 12:31 Do ya think we should forget Denton Hill & send tax dollars instead to Phila & Pittsburgh. Because that's what happens.

Please get bent....

I would much rather the money be spent here, where it will bring money to our economy. Then spent in the cities.

People you really need to scroll down to Thursday afternoon when there was a summary of the Denton Hill issue. Some very interesting comments about a federal plan that involves Denton Hill, Lyman Run, state forest land around Tamarack and other elements involving national security. Plus a guy who knew stuff and was a bit loose lipped. Maybe we are being played and they expect the public to speak out against blowing all of these millions of dollars on a rich person's playground at taxpayer expense so they have an excuse to shut it down. I know a few people who ski and believe me they can afford it so why should my tax dollars create a playground for them. Only 10 percent of Americans ski, by the way, and I'll bet 80 percent or more of them can afford it without you and me having to create their play area. Did someone say feckless about this? I agree.

Sell it to a private concern. Any time a government tried to run a business it ends up in disaster. Don't care what you think that's the way it is.

the best thing would be for state to sell it so it could actually see a profit. the DCNR doesnt know how to do that.

I CANT SEE THE TAX PAYERS PUTTING THAT MUCH MONEY IT AND THEN LET SOMEONE LIKE THE KNEFLEYS RUN IT FOR 35 YEAR AND NOT PUT A PENNY IN IT. AND THEN WE ARE RIGHT BACK TO WHERE WE ARE NOW !!!

3:30, you are very observant and reading between the lines, good for you. People are finally starting to catch on and understand the seriousness of this situation. And Agent 12:12 I now know who you are, clever making your post at the exact same time as your Agency number. Might be time for you to catch a flight back to Russia.
Ok, this is the situation, all across the nation the Government is buying and developing land for national defense. State, Federal, private lands are being purchased and developed into bases to deploy all kinds of defense systems. Defense against satellites, cruise missiles, bombers, lasers, ICBM's etc. The US Govt. is expecting an attack in the future. They are also developing areas to place land defense vehicles such as tanks, APC's, Strikers', Dirt Moles, etc. and Helicopters and drones. The writing is all over the place, prepare yourselves. Stock-up and become a 'Prepper',.. food, guns, ammunition, clothes, water, medical supplies etc.
We've had eight years of a bad republican president followed by eight years of a terrible democrat president, the country has been drained and is viewed as week.
When I was young just starting with the CIA there were two old timers that took me under their wing, Charlie Wilson and Gust (Gus) Avrakotos (only Greek I ever knew that I liked), These guys gave the Afghanistans Stinger Missiles to defeat the Soviets after they invaded Afghanistan. Surface to air, shoulder fired missiles that won the war for the Afghans. Anyway, They warned me about this current situation. They told me this would happen. Be Prepared!! (BoyScout Motto) Nuff Sed

why would anyone put 12.5 million dollars into something that is guaranteed to fail ? It was never busy when it was open.... Sell it to the highest bidder.

Hey and maybe we should spend millions on the Austin dam so 20 people a month can visit the area ! Now that's helping the local economy ! Come on people if Denton hill was capable of taking care of itself financially and supporting good paying jobs it would have never shut down in the first place !! Quit beating a dead horse like every one does in this area and think outside the box for once !! We need industry in this area .

This needs to be a private enterprise going forward. The DCNR should sell the acreage of the ski area to the highest bidder and let the private market and entrepreneurs develop. I couldn't imagine a serious investor throwing money at a project like this, all the while being restricted by the burden of the DCNR beuracry.

Like putting flea powder on a dead dog. Just let it go. Burry it.

They have already spent millions of dollars on the lumber museum across the street that gets a handful of people that visit it every year.....why waste more tax money. Maybe they need to allocate the moneys back into our education system so they don't have to close any schools.

apparently the surrounding stores, motels, gas stations, restaurants and other places out of towners spend lots of money when we attend the annual archery events at denton hill don't need our money. Every year 10 to 12 thousand of people are there spending lots of money. So keep fighting to close or sell it and we can find another community that needs and wants our cash.

"Due mainly to outdated infrastructure, a $12.5 million dollar investment would be required to return basic ski operations to industry standards".. That doesn't say that it would support itself or make a profit. It only means it would bring it up-to-date with requirements. "Basic ski operations" Snow and a rope!
So for $12 million you get a Government approved facility. That's it! That's all!
Who cares? People didn't come to the old facility so why would they come to this one? Because it now has smoke detectors, exit signs, emergency lighting, handicapped facilities and sprinkler systems?/ WRONG!
Sell it and let it be developed by some enterprising person or company.
Great location for a military compound or bunker.

If truth be known, Mr. Knefley is the one who profited most from that archery festival!

Agent 4:34, Comrade! Why are you on a computer that can be traced back to the Motherland! You know you were supposed to stay underground as the mole. Never to be seen NOR HEARD by the masses. You have given away our military secrets. How are we going to purchase this countryside for the Motherland under the premise of the US Government using it for "spy training". When we drive our Humvees through Coudersport, people may think we are not local rabbit hunters. Now that you have exposed yourself, you must explain what the next step is to go back underground so no one can see this writing. You did use the disappearing ink correct? I have set this writing so it will be gone within 7 days? I hope you did so too or you're in trouble! I'm tellin' on you! You're getting' a whoopin' No more sleepovers at Vladimir's place. You may have to drink the Kool-Aid when you report in.

I ski and I'm not rich. I have enjoyed teaching my kid to ski also. I'm slightly offended by peoples ignorance. It would be nice to have somewhere nice to go locally and not have to spend a fortune on a day of fun. For you crazy s.o.b's go and crawl back under the anti gov and dooms day rock you came from. It's about time some tax dollars got spent here on something we can US all year long.
