Farmers' Market Meeting

A meeting to plan for the 2016 Potter County Farmers’ Market will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Coudersport Public Library.

The group welcomes interested persons to attend this meeting to learn more about opportunities to participate as vendors at the market. In order to participate, a vendor must be actively engaged in the production of fruits, honey, maple syrup, vegetables, eggs, dairy products, plants, crops, trees or livestock, poultry and fish and/or engaged in producing products such as baked goods, jams, jellies, fine crafts in their local homes or businesses. Vendors within a 50 mile radius of Coudersport may participate.

“As the local food movement continues to grow across the country and people want to know where their food comes from, a local farmers’ market provides the producer a great way to market their products and get to know their customers,” says a market spokesperson.

“We’re all interested in building a strong local food movement. Our market has been a popular source of fresh produce, baked goods, jams, jellies, relishes, maple products and honey as well as alpaca products, woodcrafts, pottery and other hand-made items. We welcome folks with an interest in learning more about participating in the market to attend this meeting.”

Last year the Potter County Farmers’ Market was held on Fridays from late May through the first week in October in downtown Coudersport, on the corner of North East and East Second Streets. This location adjacent to the courthouse square, provides adequate parking for participants and customers.

Potential vendors with questions may contact Metzger Heritage Farm at 274-8004 or via email at metzgerfarm@gmail.com.

Do you need to be state inspected to make bake goods, jams, jellies, and such?

Farmer market vendors must comply with the local, state and federal regulations that apply to their products. Therefore, farmer market vendors selling home-made items (bake goods, jams, jellies) would need to obtain a license from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. More information contact the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Food Safety and Laboratory Services 717-787-4315.
