Anna V. Michelitsch, 96, of S. Brooklynside Rd., Port Allegany, PA passed away Thursday (Apr. 21, 2016) in Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, after a lengthy illness.

Born January 20, 1920, in Port Allegany, she was a daughter of Karl and Lena Heath Michelitsch.

Anna was a longtime resident of the area and a graduate of Port Allegany High School, Class of 1937, and of Geisinger School of Nursing, Class of 1940. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Maryland. She worked as an Operating Room Supervisor at Geisinger until 1945.

In 1945, she entered the Army Nurse Corps and later in 1947 transferred to the US Air Force where she remained until her retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973. While in the Air Force, Anna earned numerous commendations including the Meritorious Service Medal.
From 1973 to 1983, Anna was employed as the Director of Nursing at the Port Allegany Community Hospital, before her retirement.

She was a member of the St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club and former member of the Parish Council. She was a member of the Military Officers Association, Air Force Nurses Association, and the Geisinger Alumni Nurses Association.

Anna was an avid bridge player, enjoyed reading, watching golf and Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and closely followed national and international news throughout her life. Her principal interest, however, was her family who will always remember her kindness and generous spirit.

Surviving are three nephews, D. Joseph (Diane) Michelitsch of Port Allegany, Kirk (Jackie) Michelitsch of Brookville, PA, John (Cindy) Noren of Tuckasegee, NC; two nieces, Mary Lena (Duane) Gregg of Port Allegany, Karen (Greg) Kirkindall of Middlebury Center, PA; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Hubert Michelitsch, died in infancy, Charles, Edward, and Donald Michelitsch; a sister, Helena Noren; a nephew, Karl Michelitsch; and three nieces, Margie A. Kostkas, JoAnn McCloskey, and Carol A. Morgan.

Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany. A scriptural wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday (Apr. 25, 2016) in St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, Port Allegany, with Rev. Charles Schmitt as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Port Allegany.

A military service will be conducted by the Port Allegany Honor Guard following the funeral service.

Memorials can be made to the St. Gabriel’s Church Memorial Fund or the Port Area Ambulance Service.
