Celebrating Arbor Day 2016 this Friday, April 29th

Arbor Day 2016 is this Friday, April 29nd. This day pays honor to the founder of Arbor Day, J. Sterling Morton, who planned the first Arbor Day in April 1872.

He and his wife were lovers of nature and as early pioneers in Nebraska; they recognized the importance of trees to serve as windbreaks, to keep soil in place, for fuel and building materials, and for shade. Morton encouraged tree planting by individuals, civic organizations and groups.

It was estimated that more than one million trees were planted in his home state of Nebraska on that first Arbor Day. In 1885 the date of April 29nd, Morton’s birthday, was selected as the date for its permanent observance. At the Arbor Day observance in 1885, trees were also planted by school classes who had the duty to plant and later care for a tree.

The McKean County Conservation District encourages residents to plant a tree for Arbor Day and to care for the trees you have. Trees are as important to us today as they were to Morton and early settlers so many years ago.
