Community Pulls Together for Evergreen Elm

By Anne Holliday
WESB Local News

The Bradford community came through for the residents of Evergreen Elm who lost everything in a house fire on Wednesday.

Even before 9 a.m. Thursday many more clothes than imaginable had piled up at the drop-off locations, including WESB/The Hero.

Now, the main thing they need is money.

Evergreen Elm’s Barb Caskey explained that one reason for the money is that the residents each had some cash in the house for incidentals like a bottle of pop, a candy bar or a magazine. That, along with everything else, was lost.

If you’d like to help, donations can be made at the Evergreen Elm office in the PNC Bank Building at 71 Main Street.

Nine of the 11 people who lived at 8 Elm Street were home when the fire broke out at around noon, but they were evacuated and no one was hurt. They’re currently staying at a local hotel and, Caskey says, they’ll be there for at least over the weekend. She says it’s important to keep them together because they’re like a family.

Damage to one of the most historic homes in Bradford – and the first Evergreen Elm group home – is estimated at $200,000.
