Forest Management/Habitat Tour

On Sunday May 1st, 2016 the Susquehannock State Forest will be hosting its annual forest management/habitat tour. Each year we try to highlight a different region of the district and the forest/wildlife management practices that are taking place. This year the tour will be in the Oleona and Cross Fork areas of the County.

Representatives of the Bureau of Forestry, PA Game Commission and Black Forest Conservation Association will be leading the tour. Topics this year include; the history of the Pennsylvania Civilian Conservation Corp, turn of the century logging and settlement, local equine camping and trail riding opportunities and district timber and wildlife management program. We will be traveling to multiple sites on State Forest Land to look at and discuss the topics mentioned above.

The goal of the tour is to exchange information, build a better relationship with those that use the state forest, and provide participants with a better understanding of the complexity and improvements that we are seeing, in terms of sustainable forest management in North Central Pennsylvania. We hope that all involved leave with a better understanding of how and why our State Forests are managed and are able to adopt some of these same forest and wildlife management techniques on their own properties.

The tour will begin at 9:00 am at Ole Bull State Park. The park is located off state route 144. Habitat Tour signs will be posted at the entrance to the park. The tour will conclude at 2:00 pm. The tour is free of charge. Transportation and lunch will be provided. For more information or to register for the tour call the district office at 814-274-3600 or email at fd15@pa.gov .
