Think About It

Can God Fit In A Box?
by Pastor B.J. Knefley

Have you ever tried to put God in a box? Perhaps you have never thought about that question but interestingly we all seem to do this at times. How? We do it every time we define God by our own understanding and finite minds. The problem is that God; the creator of all things can’t be so easily defined. His mercy and grace for an example are so vast that we can’t even begin to fathom them. His forgiveness goes beyond our understanding. Many have people that are on their list who they would consider to far gone for forgiveness. They’ve hurt us or someone else too much. Yet God’s forgiveness is even extended to them. The worst of the worst have an open channel to God through forgiveness and reconciliation. Hard to believe but it’s true.

This is what God says in Isaiah 55:8, 9; "My thoughts are completely different from yours," says the LORD. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” As much as we might try, we can never fit God into a box. Just when we think that we have Him all figured out, He does something that messes up our whole theology. This is what happened at Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit was given in power, those observing thought that they were drunk, (Acts 2:13), yet Peter got up and explained what was happening and the end result was that about 3000 people were added to the church that day, (Acts 2:41). Why doesn’t this happen today? Perhaps we have God in such a box that we won’t let Him out so that He can do this. What keeps Him in the box? Our unbelief, skepticisms, lack of faith, or simply, it doesn’t fit our understanding of theology.

So how then do we get God out of the box if that’s where we have Him? Nicodemas sought out Jesus during a time when all the other religious leaders were opposing Him. He took a risk to challenge what he thought he knew thinking that perhaps he didn’t have all the answers. Are you willing to take that risk? Think about it.

Bernie, this is so true. We let it happen way too many times even in our Praise n Worship, worried someone is watching us and allowing it to hinder us from how God wants us to genuinely praise n worship, Keep these truth of nuggets coming, I love reading them, they're so helpful n so uplifting n encouraging
