Gabe Hakvaag (center) chats with Pikachu (right) about the upcoming Hamilton-Gibson Improv Workshop as Gumby (left) and Yoda listen in.

Hamilton-Gibson Productions is hosting a one-week workshop where participants will learn key elements of improvisational comedy. The workshop is free. Pre-register by Friday, Aug. 5.

Participants will meet nightly at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 8-12 at the Warehouse Theatre on Central Avenue in Wellsboro. Each evening, the group will learn some improv techniques, play games, and create a mini-skit using that day’s lessons.

The attendees will graduate by performing an evening of improv skits on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theatre. The Pay-What-You-Can performance is open to the public.

Director Gabe Hakvaag is leading the workshop. He has a long history in sketch and improvisational comedy. He worked with comedy troupes such as the Unusual Suspects, Broadcast Free Radio, Renegade Duck and others. His collaboration with improve comedian Kurt Fitzpatrick created the one-man show “Rebel Without A Niche,” which premiered in New York City in June 2006 and has since been performed throughout North America.

“Improv is working on stage without a script,” Hakvaag said. “So there is no safety net, but also no boundaries on what can happen. It can be very scary to be on stage under these conditions. That’s why improve comes with a set of basic rules of engagement to make sure everyone on stage is working together and never leaving someone stranded without support,” he noted. “When everyone on stage is engaged and listening to each other, the results are surprising and often very funny.”

Workshop participants will learn techniques for creating a character and situation, responding and advancing, presenting ideas in a scene and reacting to other players.

Anyone who can commit to the five-day workshop schedule and performance date is welcome to attend.

To pre-register by Friday, Aug. 5, call the Hamilton Gibson office at 570-724-2079 or email hamgib@gmail.com.
