The Galeton Rotary Club met for it's weekly meeting at the Ox Yoke Inn on July 14th

David Castano
David Castano. President of the Potter County Historical Society, spoke about the German prisoner of war camp at Lyman Run. The facility at Lyman Run was built as one of the CCC camps in Potter County during the great depression in the mid 1930's.

Robert Lyman approached the federal government in 1944 and asked for POW help in cutting wood to fuel his chemical factories. The products produced by the chemical factories aided the war effort. The authorities upgraded the camp to accommodate about 50 prisoners and army guards. The camp was used from April 1945 to September 1945. They not only cut wood, but did a lot of work helping pick potatoes.

Well known Potter Countian, Milton Braun from Germania, was a corporal in the US Army and was the interpreter between the Germans and Americans.

This certainly was an interesting event in the history of our county and especially well presented by David. It is good to know about these events for the present and future generations.
