Think About It

What is Truth?
by Pastor B.J. Knefley

The idea of truth is an interesting subject. Interesting because we all have our ideas as to what is true and what isn’t. I’m not referring to laws of nature although some might disagree with me. Scientific truths are also not in dispute yet the Flat Earth Society might have a different opinion. Opinion doesn’t constitute truth any more than does believing something cause it to be truth. Such is the problem with truth.

I have worked with many people who suffered from delusions. These delusions caused them to believe many things all of which were considered by them to be true. Imaginary people that I couldn’t see, voices that I couldn’t hear were just some of the things that these people responded to and acted upon. In their mind it was all true and attempting to refute the delusion wasn’t a good idea. This can also be true when it comes to confronting the belief systems of others as even false truths can be defended in very strong ways. So what is truth and how can we even discover it? The answer to this is simply evidence. There must be an evidentiary trail that brings one to a conclusion. Such is the case in a court decision. For example a small claims court renders its verdict upon the preponderance of evidence.

We live in a culture that is filled with fake information all reportedly to be true. After all, if it’s on the Internet then it must be true right? I don’t know how many times I’ve been sent something that after just a little investigation turned out to be false. Even true information can be woven in such a manner as to perpetrate a falsehood. Sound bites, a quote from here or there, can create a different story when they’re put together without their contextual environment in which they were spoken.

As a person of faith, one who believes the Bible, I believe in investigating everything. I don’t take things for granted. I check out others of opposing views. I look at all of the evidence and come to a conclusion. What is truth? You won’t come by it by your opinion; it will take a lot of investigation. Think about it.
