Efforts under way to find abandoned Pa. gas, oil wells
Andrew Zadnik probably walked through the same patch of woods in Toms Run Nature Reserve a dozen times while inspecting an abandoned oil well without realizing the remnants of another uncapped well were sticking out of the ground nearby.
A contractor hired by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to plug two non-producing wells on the preserve in Kilbuck and Ohio townships found it and another one, evidence of the unmapped drilling that took place for decades before the first reporting requirements were passed in the 1950s.
“They were completely hidden. Nobody knew about them,” said Zadnik, director of land stewardship for the conservancy, which obtained a $140,000 grant from shale well impact fee money to plug the first two wells and is considering what to do about others.

Local homeless vets receive hand up with $199,000 grant
By AMANDA JONES Era Correspondent amandajonesera@gmail.com
Bradford Era
EMPORIUM — A new program is benefitting veterans in the area by identifying and assisting individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
A grant in the amount of $199,000 was utilized to set up the homelessness prevention program by the Northern Tier Community Action Corporation (NTCAC) to benefit veterans in Cameron, Elk, McKean and Potter counties.
In February, Emporium resident Bob Hostler was appointed to serve as the homeless veterans outreach coordinator working with the program, which Hostler says currently has about 10 veterans currently enrolled.
“I didn’t think this affected us in this area, but it does,” Hostler said. “It’s not the older vets most people think of when they think of homeless veterans, at least not in this area. It’s not the guys living on the streets with serious mental health issues like you see in New York City or DC. Here, it’s younger guys, mostly 21-28 years of age.”
“Every once in awhile we get a tip on someone squatting in an old RV or a blighted house, but we have a lot of couch bouncers or those who are just getting ready to be evicted.” Hostler stated that these veterans are the hardest to find because so many of them do not fit into the traditional definition of homeless. “They’re couch hopping. Staying with one friend till they’ve worn out their welcome and then moving on. They lack direction.” Read more....

COMMUNITY PRAYER WALK SCHEDULED WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK
Coudersport, Pennsylvania, March 11, 2016– During Holy Week, Coudersport Ministerium will host a Community Prayer Walk on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 beginning at noon.
All are welcome to join us. Walkers can meet in front of Christ Church, 601 N. Main Street at noon, or can join the walk at any point along Main Street. The walk will end at the Coudersport Free Methodist Freedom Center located at 507 S. Main Street. A soup and sandwich lunch will be offered at the Freedom Center beginning at noon and continuing until all of the Prayer Walkers have eaten.
The purpose of prayer-walking is to seek God's guidance, mercy, and transforming power—both for our community, and for ourselves as God's servants in this community. During the walk several stops are made along the way to pray for the residents of the community, the businesses, our government, and the world.
Prayer-walking can be a valuable tool for identifying and sharing needs and concerns, for connecting with partners in prayer, becoming more familiar with the community we all serving, and preparing us spiritually for renewal in our lives and the celebration of the Resurrection of Christ at Easter.

Bradford Youth Taking Soccer Skills Overseas
March 11, 2016--To say Todd Smith gets a kick out of soccer is an understatement.
The Bradford teen will be showcasing his soccer moves on the international stage when the 16-year-old reports to the ChievoVerona International Academy in Chievo (outside of Verona), Italy, today. The academy is an elite training camp that brings together those with impressive soccer skills from all over the world.
While there, Todd will play against some of the best soccer players in the world and show what this Bradford Area High School sophomore has to offer.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Todd said of the 12-day camp. “Hopefully they will see me as a very good player when I am over there.
“As a kid I guess I went towards soccer instead of football,” he said, adding he started his love for soccer at the tender age of 3. “There’s no other sport.”
And in a world where location is everything, Todd could not be in a better place – Italy, Spain and England are the top European countries in soccer.
Todd, who is believed to be the first soccer player from Bradford to go to this academy, is ready for whatever comes.
If scouted and given an offer while in Italy, the center midfielder is prepared to make the move to Europe if he gets the call. If not, he hopes to play soccer in college at a District I school. His ultimate goal is to play professionally.
“As a student, I have to keep an open mind for ideas, routes to success.”
The modest teen is not taking this opportunity for granted.
“Yes, this is my moment … this is a big accomplishment,” he said.
The academy is a residential program for hands-on, intense training. While this may seem intimidating to some, Todd is used to hard work.
He participates in the Buffalo (N.Y.) Empire United team which takes him to western New York three days a week. This is a club team that travels all over the region. He also has played varsity soccer at BAHS in both his freshman and sophomore years.
And Todd doesn’t just use his noggin for headers – he also takes AP and college courses in high school and maintains a 4.0.
“I don’t know how he does it,” his mom Barb Smith said. “I wish I did, but I don’t … he works very hard and does it all on his own pretty much.”
It’s apparent Todd is driven on and off the field.
“I always do my schoolwork. I am very dedicated to my (school) work. That work comes first. I try to balance both out.”
It turns out his brother Grant may claim responsibility for inspiring his brother on the soccer field.
“His brother Grant played and he followed Grant,” Smith said. Following Grant has afforded Todd to follow his dreams.
“That ball. He would kick it all the time,” Smith said.
And Grant won’t be far away from his brother in Italy as the trip has turned into a family affair.
“We are up for an adventure,” said Smith, who is making the trek to Italy with her husband Larry and older son Grant.
Todd’s also up for an adventure by showing his skills in a major way, but this is something he has been ready for. Todd said he’s been searching for ways to up his exposure.
For the past couple of years, Todd has taken part in camps throughout the United States, but was not asked to go to the international one, which was in London. But in 2015, he took part in the regional camp in Pittsburgh followed by the national training camp in Georgia. At that camp, he was picked to go to Italy.
Todd knew he was going to the camp in July, but the word did not get out until recently.
“I have kind of kept it quiet,” he said, adding his fellow students in Bradford think it’s “pretty cool” and his teammates in Buffalo “are excited for me.”
Classmates and teammates are not the only ones excited.
“I am very excited,” Smith said. “He has been working hard all his life for something and it has finally happened.
Todd added that he did not get this chance on his own.
“I would like to thank for guiding me on my road to success so far. Those people include my Bradford coaches; Bradford High Coaches Wes Lorhman, Patrick Connelly, Peter Butler, University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Men's soccer coach, Derek Panol, Bob Bly, Dana Wells, Lonny Packard, Justin Ridley, Garrick Anderson, Greg Gleason, Danny Neighbor, Donny Hayden, R.J. Jordan, Cody Bly. Also, Buffalo Empire United coach Selim Talbi, Mike Ertel and Mel Mahler. I would also like to have a big thanks to Greg Knowlton at Knowlton's Personal Fitness and the most thanks to my parents and family for the love and support throughout the years.”

Thank you from Donna Thomas and the Thomas and Achberger families.
We would like to thank all of the people who came together to honor the life of a truly wonderful man.
Jack was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to all. We will always remember the many acts of kindness shown to us.
To the people who came together to call, offer help, send cards, bring food, and donate to the library in his name, you are truly appreciated.
A special thank you to Valerie, Pastor Mastin, the Potter County Honor Guard, the Ulysses Fire Company, and the gracious ladies who provided the lovely meal for our family and friends.
The advantage to living in a close knit community can never be taken for granted. Jack knew so many people and if he didn't know someone, he asked. He will be missed.
Thank you from Donna Thomas and the Thomas and Achberger families.

RIVER AND ROADWAY CLEAN-UP Sunday, March 20TH In Preparation For Annual Canoe Classic April 2nd
Several local organizations will be coming together for our Annual River and roadside clean-up on Sunday, March 20TH, and we are looking for volunteers.
This is great opportunity to help make our area even more beautiful. You can choose to help clean the Driftwood Branch Stream or clean the roadway along Rt. 120.
To participate in the river clean up you must have a canoe and a partner or kayak. You will be assigned to specific locations along the stream or highway. We will be meeting at the railroad bridge in Cameron at 12:00 (noon). Gloves, trash bags, and safety vests will be provided to participants.
We are hopeful that we will have enough volunteers to clean the Stream from Cameron to Driftwood and RT 120 from Emporium to Driftwood. Refreshments will be served.
As always, we encourage young people to become involved in this event. This is a great way to make a positive impact and earn project service hours while having fun. You can register at the High School office. To earn service credits you must also sign in on location at the start and finish of the event. Contact a representative of one of the following organizations if you have any questions.
Randy Bailey - Canoe and Kayak Classic Organization - 814-546-2011

EPA Encourages Americans to Become Leak Detectives
PHILADELPHIA (March 11, 2016) Each year, more than one trillion gallons of water are wasted by easy-to-fix household leaks, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense program. That’s why EPA is encouraging consumers to “Be a Leak Detective” during WaterSense’s eighth annual Fix a Leak Week, March 14 through 20, 2016, by finding and fixing leaks around the home.
“Not only do leaks waste precious water, they could be adding 10 percent to your utility bill,” said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “By taking just minutes to detect leaks at home, the average family could save more than 10,000 gallons of water every year.”
Becoming a leak detective can be accomplished in three simple steps: check, twist, and replace:
Check for silent toilet leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank at the back of a toilet; wait 10 minutes, and if the color appears in the bowl, it’s a leak.
Twist faucet, shower, and pipe connections tightly to avoid leaks, or screw on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator to save water and energy.
Replace broken or leaky fixtures with WaterSense labeled models, which are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well or better than standard models.
To learn more about detecting leaks or to find a Fix a Leak Week event in your community, visit www.epa.gov/watersense/fixaleak.

Route 153 Project to Begin Mid-March
Clearfield, PA – Roadway improvement work will get underway in mid-March on Route 153 in Clearfield County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). Signs will be set the week of March 7 and work featuring tree trimming and erosion and sedimentation controls will get underway March 14. The project will improve roadway integrity through drainage and guide rail improvements, along with paving. The project will also replace two small structures (one over Anderson Creek and one over Wise Run) with box culverts.
The work zone stretches along Route 153 from S. B. Elliot State Park to Parker Dam State Park. Overall work on the project will include the addition of a northbound turn lane at Laurel Run Road, drainage upgrades, guide rail updates, paving, and structure replacement.
Traffic control will feature an alternating traffic pattern during daylight hours, with flaggers in the roadway. Travel delays are likely. Temporary traffic signals will be used at each of the box culvert sites when that work takes place.
PennDOT expects the project to be complete by mid-November, with all work weather and schedule dependent. Glen O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor on this $3.8 million job.
Drivers are reminded to move through work zones with caution, watch for flaggers in the roadway, obey posted speed limits, and always buckle up.
