The Galeton Rotary Club met for it's weekly meeting at the Ox Yoke Inn on July 14th
David Castano |
Robert Lyman approached the federal government in 1944 and asked for POW help in cutting wood to fuel his chemical factories. The products produced by the chemical factories aided the war effort. The authorities upgraded the camp to accommodate about 50 prisoners and army guards. The camp was used from April 1945 to September 1945. They not only cut wood, but did a lot of work helping pick potatoes.
Well known Potter Countian, Milton Braun from Germania, was a corporal in the US Army and was the interpreter between the Germans and Americans.
This certainly was an interesting event in the history of our county and especially well presented by David. It is good to know about these events for the present and future generations.

IMPROVISATIONAL COMEDY WORKSHOP REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS AUG. 5
Gabe Hakvaag (center) chats with Pikachu (right) about the upcoming Hamilton-Gibson Improv Workshop as Gumby (left) and Yoda listen in. |
Hamilton-Gibson Productions is hosting a one-week workshop where participants will learn key elements of improvisational comedy. The workshop is free. Pre-register by Friday, Aug. 5.
Participants will meet nightly at 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 8-12 at the Warehouse Theatre on Central Avenue in Wellsboro. Each evening, the group will learn some improv techniques, play games, and create a mini-skit using that day’s lessons.
The attendees will graduate by performing an evening of improv skits on Saturday, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Warehouse Theatre. The Pay-What-You-Can performance is open to the public.
Director Gabe Hakvaag is leading the workshop. He has a long history in sketch and improvisational comedy. He worked with comedy troupes such as the Unusual Suspects, Broadcast Free Radio, Renegade Duck and others. His collaboration with improve comedian Kurt Fitzpatrick created the one-man show “Rebel Without A Niche,” which premiered in New York City in June 2006 and has since been performed throughout North America.
“Improv is working on stage without a script,” Hakvaag said. “So there is no safety net, but also no boundaries on what can happen. It can be very scary to be on stage under these conditions. That’s why improve comes with a set of basic rules of engagement to make sure everyone on stage is working together and never leaving someone stranded without support,” he noted. “When everyone on stage is engaged and listening to each other, the results are surprising and often very funny.”
Workshop participants will learn techniques for creating a character and situation, responding and advancing, presenting ideas in a scene and reacting to other players.
Anyone who can commit to the five-day workshop schedule and performance date is welcome to attend.
To pre-register by Friday, Aug. 5, call the Hamilton Gibson office at 570-724-2079 or email hamgib@gmail.com.

July 22, 2016
Smethport Web — by Les Jordan Jr.
The Smethport Area Chamber of Commerce invites all chamber members and other interested citizens to attend a special meeting on Thursday, July 28 at 6 pm at Chico’s Restaurant to begin a process of reorganization.
Themes of the re-organization include developing a new focus for the direction the chamber wants to pursue such as:
Help to market the local businesses and community.
Continuing to maintain the focus of taking pride in the Smethport community and promoting the goodwill and closeness of this small town.
Return to our slogan of: Developing Pride in our Community.
Questions we will present to the members include:
How would you like to see us promote local businesses and community attributes?
What events would you like to see that will continue to build the camaraderie of this community?
What would a 2017 Smethport Chamber Festival look like? This was a staple of the old chamber, if it returned what would be a part of it in 2017?
The new chamber board hopes to structure how the board will function and maintain a leadership role, and in a manner that promotes positive openness and connection. The board wants members to know that it is providing direction for the chamber, its ideas, focus, and purpose.
President, Megan Simms
Vice President, Les Jordan Jr.
Secretary, Heidi Scrivo Passmore
Treasurer, Lauren Bly
Director, Phil Smith

HUNTERS WORKING TO IMPROVE DEER HUNTING
Deer Management Working Group to begin meeting in August.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is bringing several hunting groups together to expand the agency’s goal to improve deer hunting in Pennsylvania.
The groups will work collaboratively as the “Deer Management Working Group” to discuss ideas and develop workable solutions to benefit Pennsylvania’s hunters.
“If you look at our more than 940,000 license buyers, nearly all of them are deer hunters, and many of them hunt only deer,” says Game Commissioner Tim Layton, of Windber, who is part of the working group. “Deer hunting is an important part of the lives of so many Pennsylvanians, and it’s important their voices be heard.”
The Deer Management Working Group brings together a collection of Pennsylvanians who value the quality of the state’s deer hunting, and gives them a voice in helping to shape the future of deer management and oversee the implementation of management practices.
“Pennsylvania is a deer-hunting state,” says Deer Management Working Group member Kip Adams, a biologist with the Quality Deer Management Association.
Citing QDMA’s Whitetail Report 2016, Adams points to the facts in explaining why Pennsylvania is one of the best states in which to pursue deer.
“Pennsylvania is No. 5 in the nation for the number of bucks harvested per square mile, No. 5 in the number of does harvested per square mile, and No. 4 in productivity,” says Adams. “The stats are clear, Pennsylvania is one of the best states to hunt deer.”
The task of the Deer Management Working group is to identify how to make deer hunting even better.
Members of the Governor’s Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation, the Quality Deer Management Association, the Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, the United Bowhunters of Pennsylvania and the Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania have joined the working group and will work alongside of the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners’ deer subcommittee and Game Commission staff in so doing.
The working group is slated to meet for the first time in August.
Game Commission Executive Director R. Matthew Hough said the working group not only provides an opportunity for the agency to gather input on deer hunting from across a broad cross-section, it allows that dialogue to continue as the deer-management plan is implemented.
Plans also are underway for developing the next deer-management plan, slated to become effective in 2018.
“Public input has always been an important part of the Game Commission’s process for managing wildlife,” Hough said. “When the agency updated its deer-management plan about 15 years ago, advisory committees much like this one were formed to make sure no opinion was overlooked. When that plan was updated, more recently, the goals were presented at seven separate open houses where the public was able to show its strong support for the goals.
“Our commitment is to continue and expand that collaboration, developing it to make it the best it can be,” Hough said. “And since there are no plans to ever disband the new Deer Management Working Group, and its members will continue to meet quarterly to discuss deer management, the working group will provide an opportunity for continual and lasting input that can only improve deer hunting in Pennsylvania.”
The working group will meet monthly during its first four months, with members being informed about the Game Commission’s existing process for managing the deer herd in balance with available habitat, and advised of other pressing issues including the emergence of chronic wasting disease and managing deer in more-urban areas.
“We will also open discussions on how the agency can provide more technical information to private landowners to help them better manage their land to improve deer hunting,” said Hough.
Educating private landowners to help them enhance deer hunting on their land is a relatively new direction for the agency, but it makes sense, Hough said, since most of the state is privately owned.
The working group will visit areas to view forest habitat and better understand deer-management challenges.
Ultimately, the group will formalize its goals and vision, then continue to meet quarterly thereafter.
The working group’s initially identified goals are to: provide continual feedback on the effectiveness of the deer-management plan; inform working group members about the past and present methods used to manage the state’s deer herd; develop strategies to improve deer hunting in Pennsylvania; identify questions that need to be addressed; identify other methods the Game Commission can implement to help landowners improve deer hunting on their land; and to develop a formal process for delivering information from each committee member to their constituents throughout.
Minutes of each meeting will be posted on the agency’s website so other deer-hunting enthusiasts will have the opportunity to learn more about the subject matter discussed at the meeting, and allow all hunters the opportunity to voice their opinion back to the agency by writing or sending an e-mail.
“The Deer Management Working Group is not a policy-making committee,” said Brian Hoover, president of the Board of Game Commissioners. “However, we hope the work this group takes on and the recommendations it provides will help the agency in developing new programs and policies to further improve deer hunting in this great state.”

PITT-BRADFORD STUDENT RESEARCHER TESTS THEORY THAT PLANT STEROLS CAN BLOCK CANCER
Andrew McRandal, a biology major from Pittsburgh, experiments with various plant compounds to see if they can reduce or block cancer in fruit flies. |
BRADFORD, Pa. -- What if certain foods could block cancer? Andrew McRandal spent his summer trying to answer that question, using tiny fruit flies as guinea pigs
The sophomore University of Pittsburgh at Bradford pre-medicine student from Pittsburgh learned that this was a complex process. It involved the precise timing of fly fertility, administration of carbon dioxide and deftly tapping on a beaker of fruit flies, a trick that should make them all fall to the bottom for easy separation.
McRandal is conducting research overseen by Dr. Lauren Yaich, associate professor of biology. Yaich has long worked with fruit flies because they are inexpensive and produce a new generation every 10 days.
Her newest research involves a promising hypothesis that compounds found in plants may be able to reduce cancer risk. Food derivatives such as wheat germ and rice bran oil are full of phytosterols currently used to lower cholesterol in humans, she explained.
“Because a lot of people think phytosterols could also lower cancer risk, we thought it would be interesting to look at,” she said.
She returned to her knowledge of fruit flies to design an experiment that could be performed by a student researcher. The first step was to breed flies that would develop cancer without intervention.
To carry out the breeding experiments, two fly lines were obtained from Dr. Ross Cagan at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. One line carried a tumor-causing gene. The other line produces a protein that could activate the tumor-causing gene. By themselves, each fly line looked perfectly normal. But when mated together, their offspring would grow tumors on their eyes.
To make things even trickier, the experiment required that the female flies be virgins. Here, the sped-up life cycle of the flies becomes an advantage. A beaker full of male and female flies was allowed to reproduce, then the females laid their eggs in a food medium (to simulate fruit) in the bottom of the container. Once females laid their eggs, McRandal tapped the beaker, the adult flies fell to the bottom, and he collected and removed them.
The lifecycle of a fruit fly is similar to that of a butterfly. Once the eggs hatched, the larvae ate the food medium until they were ready to climb the sides of the beaker and undergo metamorphosis inside a pupa, changing into an adult fly. When the virgin flies emerged from their pupae, McRandal had eight hours from the time the flies hatched until they reached sexual maturity. As the new adult flies emerged, he collected them, saving the virgin females and tossing the males.
Once virgin females from one line were obtained, they were then mated with males from the other line in vials containing either regular food as a control or food that was rich in phytosterols. From this cross, McRandal would then examine the tumors in the offspring under a microscope.
McRandal gave each fly a score based on whether it had developed a tumor and what size it was, scoring about 200 fruit flies in an hour.
“It can be therapeutic,” McRandal said about the meditation-like mindset needed to score hundreds of fruit flies.
“I love the research,” he said, adding that he has been helping with lab work in the chemistry department as well as a student worker.
McRandal said that while he learns a lot from reading, the research helps him make better sense of what he is reading.
Currently, he is reading a lot. Having just collected results, he will synthesize his results with background information from other scientists into a paper that he hopes to present at several undergraduate research conferences this year. He has not yet formed definite conclusions for the research.
“What is the most rewarding part of research is when you collect the results,” McRandal said.
Yaich agreed. “Sometimes, you’re the only person in the world who knows what you’ve found out – until you share it.”
