Bradford Little Theatre Announces Auditions for “Harvey”

Bradford Little Theatre (BLT) announces open auditions for their next quality production, “Harvey.” A Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Mary Chase, “Harvey” is the story of Elwood P. Dowd, a perfect gentleman, and his best friend, the eponymous Harvey. Harvey is a six-foot and three inches tall white rabbit, invisible to all but Elwood. When Elwood begins introducing Harvey around town, his embarrassed sister, Veta Louise, and her daughter, Myrtle Mae, determine to commit Elwood to a sanitarium. A comedy of errors ensues when they all arrive at the sanitarium, and the young, handsome, and very flirtatious Dr. Sanderson commits Veta instead of Elwood!

Director, Jessica Ann Coder, is looking for actors aged 17 and over to fill eleven roles. "I can't wait to see the amount of talent that our area is filled with at auditions!" There are roles for all level of skill and time commitment.

The cast of characters is as follows; Elwood P. Dowd, the central character of the play, a friendly eccentric who spends his days and nights in the taverns of his small town. His sister, Veta Louise Simmons, an upstanding woman who is beyond embarrassed by her brother's friendship with the invisible Harvey because of the effects it may have on her standing in the community. Myrtle Mae Simmons, Veta's daughter, who is only concerned about her uncle because she hopes to find a man to marry and worries that Elwood's eccentricities will ruin her prospects.

Also in the play are sanitarium employees Dr. William B. Chumney; an esteemed psychiatrist, head of the sanitarium. He is difficult and unwilling to tolerate mistakes. Dr. Lyman Sanderson; young and flirtatious but a good psychiatrist. Ruth Kelly; a young nurse for the sanitarium. Pretty. Appears to have some sort of a love/hate relationship with Dr. Sanderson. And Wilson; the muscle of Chumley's Rest (Sanitarium.) He is devoted to his job, which is to handle the patients who will not cooperate voluntarily. He is vulgar, crude, and completely devoted to Dr. Chumley.

Other characters include, Judge Omar Gaffney; an old family friend of the Dowds and the family's lawyer. Betty Chumley; Dr. Chumley's wife. Like Veta, she is more concerned with socializing than with science. Ethel Chauvenet; an old friend of the Dowd family and a prominent member of the town's social circle. Finally, E.J. Lofgren; a cab driver who regularly drives patients to the sanitarium.

"I'm very excited that the BLT board has given me the opportunity to direct ‘Harvey,’" states Ms. Coder. This will be her directorial debut as lead director for a Bradford Little Theatre production, although she has directed two murder mysteries for the VFW and has been an assistant director, stage director, and an actor in numerous previous performances.

Auditions are Wednesday, February 1 from 5-7pm and Saturday, February 4 from 1-3pm at Togi's Playhouse, 18 Welch Ave, Bradford. Unable to attend auditions but still want to try out? Contact the director at For more information about the show or BLT visit us on Facebook ( or on the web at
