Hidden Data Suggests Fracking Created Widespread, Systemic Impact in Pennsylvania

Trends Show Impacts Are Getting Worse
by Melissa A. Troutman, Sierra Shamer and Joshua B. Pribanic for Public Herald

After a three-year investigation in Pennsylvania, Public Herald has uncovered evidence of widespread and systemic impacts related to “fracking,” a controversial oil and gas technology.

Ending over a decade of suppression by the state, this evidence is now available to the public for the first time.

In Pennsylvania, the power over fracking rests in the hands of the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). When residents observe a problem, they call the Department to report it. That call gets recorded as a “complaint” as required by Chapter 58 § 3218 of the state’s oil and gas act. Read more...

In 2011, Public Herald’s first file request to DEP for complaints never produced a single document, and we learned that complaints were being held as ‘confidential.’ When asked why, an attorney from DEP’s Southwest Regional Office explained that Deputy Secretary Scott Perry didn’t want complaints to ‘cause alarm.’”

After pushing through DEP’s resistance to disclose these records, our team was able to conduct its first file review for complaints in the spring of 2013. Three years later, after more than 50 file reviews, Public Herald has scanned records for 6,819 complaint cases.

Today, due to this work, anyone can access these cases via the Pennsylvania Oil & Gas Complaint Map. See map...

When a person’s water becomes contaminated, the issue isn’t whether impacts from fracking are “widespread” or “systemic.” The issue is far more tangible – you’ve lost your water.  Read the whole article....

This report is biased and totally irrelevant. It shows no direct proof that fracking is the sole cause of any water contamination. It reports like this and the press corp that write this that make people doubt the word of the press nowadays. No wonder the president doesn't have press conferences....they can't make an honest, unbiased report on anything.

last year a 1 acre mining bond went from $1500 to $5500 . to renew a permit went from $50 to $250 and licence fee more the tripled . it takes 6 months to a year just for them to approve a mine . all this just to dig up rock for road building or whatever use you have for it

Sad that these people evolved from reporting to crusading. There is merit in holding DEP accountable but Melissa and Josh already polluted their own waters by twisting facts and opinions with speculation and conspiracy theories and assumptions. Then they added their own version of heroes vs villians into a packaged product to market themselves.

Just because nothing has happened yet doesn't mean it never will. Watch the value of your home drop dramatically once there is one spill that may affect its water.

Some banks won`t give you a mortgage if there is a nearby Marcellus well and the existing homes are devalued. That isn`t an alternative fact, it`s a real fact. Before you jump me... I`m an angry white male Republican.
