Coudersport Swimming Pool Founder Urges Committee To Continue Effort To Reach Goal

Dear Jim,

After my recent visit with centenarian, Maxine Shear (the pool's founder) I am more inspired than ever to continue our pursuit of rebuilding the Coudersport Borough Pool. Maxine told me in 1955 that she wanted her 3 children to have a safe place to swim.

She did not like the fact that the kids had to swim in the Allegheny, so she formed her committee of several ladies with young children and went to work gathering donations. Donations of $25,000.00 back in those days were a lot, much like the amount we need today, but they kept on going. She told me not to quit. "Whatever you do, don’t quit, no matter how many people make you cry or make you mad. The pool is too important to give up on."

So today, I wanted to let the community know that we still need financial support to reach our goal.

The Coudersport Borough Pool Committee and concerned citizens are continuing to collect generous donations daily at the borough office. We are still several thousand dollars away from our goal, but are encouraged by our progress.

There is currently a new Facebook page that has been set up to help inform the community of the pool funds progress. There is also a letter drive that will soon be circulating in our community. Together, as a community, our contributions can make sure the only pool in Potter County and Maxine’s dream stays here for future generations to enjoy.

I personally want to thank Maxine for her kind and encouraging words.
