Panthers Close Strong Against Aloysius, Win Third Straight

BRADFORD, Pa. - Pitt-Bradford men’s basketball closed Saturday’s game on a 28-4 scoring run and came from behind to defeat Mt. Aloysius, 78-59, for its third straight win.

Pitt-Bradford led for the majority of the game, but struggled to put the Mounties away until late. The Panthers led by as much as seven in the first half before taking a 43-37 cushion into the break.

After falling behind by eight early in the second half, Mt. Aloysius answered with a 9-0 run to go-ahead 48-47. Pitt-Bradford re-grabbed the lead on Welch’s long three, and the Mounties tied it on the next possession with a layup.

The visitors forced a turnover, and Brian Ream’s three-pointer made it 53-50 with 12:06 remaining. Nick Burk’s layup with 10:47 left stretched the Mounties lead to five. Fateem Brockington countered by converting an and-one play, and Christian Kelly-Perkins’ two free throws tied the game with just over nine minutes remaining.

Sahil Harris’ jumper on the next Pitt-Bradford possession put the Panthers in front for good, and after the teams traded baskets, Fateem Brockington’s three from the top of the key with 7:02 left made it 62-57.

Mt. Aloysius responded by converting two free throws but would go the final 5:56 without a point. Evan Greening scored inside on the next play, and the Panthers began pulling away. Pitt-Bradford iced the game at the line, going 8-10 over the final 2:28.

Pitt-Bradford shot 43 percent from the floor, including hitting eight threes, and scored 16 points off 18 Mt. Aloysius turnovers. The Panthers outrebounded the Mounties by six and held them to 2-16 shooting from long-distance in the second half. Mt. Aloysius missed its final 10 shots from the field and hit 41 percent of its attempts overall.

Brockington poured in a game-high 19 points and was 7-7 from the free throw line. Manny Welch added 16 points, and Jon Haenel chipped in with 11, hitting three first-half triples. Greening finished with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Harris totaled six rebounds, four points, three steals, three blocks and three assists.

Pitt-Bradford improves to 11-9 on the season and 9-5 in the AMCC. The Panthers host conference leader Medaille Wednesday at 8 p.m.
