Barby Ried Fund to keep the party going at SubCon

Barby Ried
OLEAN, N.Y., March 30, 2017 — SubCon employees can continue to expect joyous holiday parties and social gatherings in the future thanks to the recent establishment of the Barby Ried Social Fund at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Ms. Ried’s sibling, Jim, and sister-in-law, Juanita Ried, established the fund in memory of Barbara “Barby” Ried, a longtime SubCon employee.

Ms. Ried, the daughter of Charles and Bernadette Glass Ried, was born with Down Syndrome in 1955. After her birth, her parents and other community members came together with the intention of providing social and education opportunities for their children. Those efforts led to the establishment of the Cattaraugus County ReHabilitation Center.

The SubCon division of the ReHabilitation Center provides employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

According to her family, Barby was always proud of the paycheck she received for her hard work at SubCon.

Perhaps her favorite activity though, was attending SubCon holiday parties and social events, inspiring her siblings’ decision to establish this fund after her passing in June of 2016.
And so the Barby Ried Social Fund will provide annual grants, of up to $1,000 per year, to the SubCon division for holiday/social/entertainment activities and events to enhance the working experience of SubCon employees.

“Barby’s friends at SubCon were such a vital part of her life that we are so happy now to carry on her legacy in this way,” said Juanita Ried.

“It warms my heart to be involved with this fund,” said CRCF Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit. “Knowing Barby’s part in inspiring the ReHabilitation Center’s beginnings makes this fund extra special.”

“The Foundation is proud that it can help keep Barby’s favorite parties going at SubCon,” she said.

Donations can be made to Barby Ried Social Fund at CRCF, 301 North Union St., Suite 203, or online at

Established in 1994, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation is growing good by connecting donors to the causes they care about most in the region. Grants from the foundation support many areas, including education, scholarships, health care, the arts, community development, human service, and youth development.
