Galeton, PA, March 2017 weather

There are many comments about March weather. Coming in like a lion, etc. This year we had March weather in January and now the reverse is true. January weather in March.
One can also say the month came in like a lion and departed in the same way. I do not know what happened to the "lamb" part.

The first day of March was mild, however, that soon changed with very cold high winds. Germania and parts east of Galeton lost power. It then stayed clear , windy and very cold. It dropped to 13 degrees on the 4th and below zero on the 5th. This was the first zero or below reading for Galeton in 2017. Mid month it stayed cold with morning readings in the single digits and mid teens. The high winds put the wind chill factor below zero for that mid month time period. On the 19th it was a very winter day with a 3" snowfall. The 20th was the start of the spring season. It was sunny and milder. However a cold wind persisted with a 11 degree reading on the 22nd.

We recorded 2.84" of rain and melted precipitation for the month. Last year we had 1.99" We received a total of 7.5" of snow. in 2016 the total was 0.7" We had 8 days of 1" or more of snow on the ground . The average snow depth was 1.5" with the greatest amount 5" on the 15th. Of course, in 2016 we had no days with 1" on the ground.

The average temperature for March is 44 degrees and the average low is 21 degrees. Average rainfall is 3.05".

March, many times, is a very snowy month. Just a few readings. In 1992 we received 26", 1993 46", 1999 19" 2001 22". I could go on, however, I will leave it at that.

We recorded fog on 4 mornings and and thunderstorms on the 31st. The month indeed was going out like a lion.

Now for April. We will be starting out with a nice rainfall. April showers brings May flowers.

I just want you to know how much I LOVE this report each month... I am not really a weather watcher but I love to see the comparison from year to year. Thank you so much for your contribution and perseverance to this each and every month.
