The latest news from the State Capitol
Semi-automatic Rifles – Last session, legislation I authored (Act 168 of 2016) allowed the PA Game Commission (PGC) to study and approve the use of semi-automatic firearms and air- or gas-powered rifles for hunting. The commissioners in January preliminarily approved a proposal that would have allowed semi-automatic rifles to be used in any season where manually operated centerfire rifles now can be used.

Due to response and feedback from hunters throughout the state, the PGC’s board of directors amended that measure this week, giving final approval to hunting small game and furbearers with semi-automatic rifles beginning in the 2017-18 seasons which will begin July 1 of this year.

Under the new regulations, semi-automatic and air rifles will be approved for use for small game, furbearers, predators and woodchucks. They will not, however, be permitted during big game seasons such as deer, bear or elk.

Water Quality Upgrade for DuBois - The City of DuBois’ application for a grant that will facilitate replacement of a portion of its outdated water treatment system has been approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority.

The process for awarding these grants is competitive and based on criteria such as project readiness, cost effectiveness and potential for increased efficiency. The system that is in place has served DuBois well but is overdue for replacement. I congratulate the city on its successful application.

The grant, which amounts to more than $364,000, will allow the city to update its chemical feed and monitoring systems at the water treatment facility located in Union Township.

Applicants had to match a portion of the grant, so the award alone will not fund the entire project. With the funds that will be received, the plant will also be able to install cameras and motion detectors in order to increase safety around the facility.
Attention AnglersSaturday, April 8 will be a great day to be outdoors and introduce a young angler to the sport of fishing.

On the Road Again – Replacement of the Route 219 bridge over Powers Run at the south end of Johnsonburg is scheduled to begin the week of Monday, April 10. The project is expected to be completed by this coming August.

During this time, drivers will utilize a temporary roadway around the bridge.
And again….Replacement of these two Clearfield County bridges is scheduled to begin this coming week:

• The Route 219/Mahaffey-Grampian Highway bridge over Poplar Run near Bells Landing, Greenwood Township.

• The Route 219/Mahaffey-Grampian Highway bridge over Bell Run near Bells Landing, Greenwood Township.

In both cases, construction is expected to be complete in late October.

During construction, an alternating traffic pattern will be controlled by temporary traffic signals that allow drivers to cross both bridges in the same signal cycle. The signals are now on flash mode and will be in full operation starting this Monday, April 3.
Attention Veterans - A representative from the Pennsylvania American Legion will visit my DuBois district office this Tuesday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity for the men and women who serve or have served our country to check out programs and benefits that may be available to them.

You do not need to be an American Legion member to take advantage of this service.
