The student editors of Baily’s Beads, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s award-winning literary magazine, are seeking contest entries, submissions for special sections of music and performance poetry, and general submissions for their 2018 issue.
For the contest, participants are invited to write a piece that includes all of these seven words: lurched, chortle, attic, incite, icepack, beeswax, and orifice. Winners will be published in the 2018 edition and receive a cash prize. The deadline for entering is April 1.

The magazine is also seeking general submissions that reflect the community, and culture, or current events in a distinctive and inventive way. It accepts poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction, including memoirs, essays, commentaries, interviews and travel and nature writing. The magazine also seeks audio recordings of original music compositions and audio or video recordings of performance poetry. For those sections, composers and performers should also e-mail a written copy of their work.

Written submissions should have a separate cover sheet with name, contact information (address, e-mail and phone), title of the submission and genre or medium. To help the staff judge work on its merits, do not place a name on the work itself. Prose should be double spaced, and poetry should be single-spaced. Authors may submit up to 20 pages of writing.

The staff is also seeking art – photography, paintings, drawings, mixed media, sculpture, and digital art.

Submitted images should be high-resolution jpeg files to ensure a high-quality print.

Writers and artists do not need to be Pitt-Bradford students to make a submission. Each author/artist is asked to submit no more than 10 pieces. All submissions should be sent to The magazine accepts submissions year-round, but to ensure consideration for the next issue, please submit by April 10.
