Bill Pekarski: Day 218, Living life on my terms

with Gerri Miller.

Day 218, Living life on my terms.

Bill Pekarski

I have snow on the ground on top of my mountain so that is the official third freeze of the peepers; marking what should be the last real cold snap before warm weather. I for one feel that it is about time!

I should send a thank you out to Gerri Miller for posting a sound recording of the peepers and wood frogs at night on her Black Forest Broadcasting site. It is a shame more people don’t realize that Gerri is still broadcasting just like she used to during her days at WFRM.

She has been operating an independent, internet only radio station that is completely dedicated to our twin tiers. She reads regular news reports, provides daily school lunch menus, and so much more. The music is very eclectic and covers classic country and oldies to adult contemporary. When I was working nights in the ER, I used to bring her station up when we weren’t busy just to listen to the music.

She has an accompanying web site where she continually writes and updates news stories on a daily basis. She also offers a listing of local events of interest, some great short stories by Jeanette Buck, and regular weather reports. You can also see her do remote broadcasts from major events like the Maple Festival.

It is really nice because Gerri remembers what a local radio should be—local! You can tell how much it means to her to be on the air as she is truly dedicated to her daily duties of news reporting and offering insight into our great area for others to listen. In fact, since it is on the web, you can be in California and it sounds like you are right here. You can even use your phone to listen; what a great way to stay in touch with your home town.

It is just so nice to hear a real person who you can also see out in public and is a concerned member of the community. I can only applaud Gerri and her efforts to broadcast radio the way it should be.

Just while writing this story, I heard 3 great country songs then she read the school lunch menu list. Once it was finished, the song “Hey there Lonely Girl” played. It was always one of my favorite oldies from the greatest era of music and made me realize why I really do love her station.

I would encourage everyone to find Black Forest Broadcasting on their computer and mark it as a favorite. As I listen, I can remember the old days of WFRM when we would get up for school and listen while we ate breakfast. My favorite breakfast was when mom would make toast with melted butter and top it with cinnamon sugar so the butter made sweet little pools on top of the toast. Add to that a cup of hot chocolate and I was good for the day until school lunch. After the lunch menu was read, I could decide if I wanted to ask mom for the money to get an extra entre at lunch; especially on hot dog, wiener wing, and pizza days!

So please, give Gerri a listen and send her a note to let her know how much you enjoy Black Forest Broadcasting.

Today I am dedicating to progress to Gerri Miller for all of her efforts to keep us entertained and informed. I hope you continue to provide this service for years to come!
