Jeff Tech Student wins 2017 Art Competition 37 students entered PA-05 Congressional Art Contest

BELLEFONTE, Pa. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson recently congratulated Jeff Tech student Ms. Cassy Lester on her First Place award in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition.

Ms. Lester, of Reynoldsville, won for her acrylic painting titled, “Chocolate Lab.” An independent panel of judges selected Lester’s work from 37 entries, which is one of the largest groups to compete in Pennsylvania’s Fifth District competition.

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 to provide an opportunity for Members of Congress to encourage and recognize the artistic talents of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high school students have participated in the nationwide competition.

Ms. Lester’s artwork will be displayed in a special exhibit in the U.S. Capitol for one year with winners from each congressional district across the country.

“Congratulations to Cassy on taking home the First Place award,” Thompson said. “The field was large with 37 entries and all were tremendous works of art. I look forward to seeing Cassy’s winning piece hang in the Capitol with winners from throughout the nation.”
