AIDS Resource sees heavy Lycoming presence

Over half of the people helped by a regional nonprofit for AIDS prevention and assistance come from Lycoming County, according to experts.

AIDS Resource is a nonprofit organization that provides free HIV or AIDS prevention programs and assistance to those affected, according to Kristen Burkhart, executive director of AIDS Resource.

Burkhart gave an update about the organization as the guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport meeting at the Genetti Hotel on Thursday.

“A lot of people don’t know about the work that we do,” she said. “Part of that is on purpose. We fight so much stigma. We kind of walk a very difficult line between making sure that people who need our services know what services are available and people who don’t need our services and have something hateful to say about them don’t know that we’re available.”

She said she often hears that many people don’t know that they’re around.

“AIDS Resource was founded in 1988 by a group of community members who were concerned about the people who were dying with HIV… then in Lycoming County,” she said.

Burkhart said they’ve expanded tremendously since then as treatments have evolved.

“Now we focus on people who are living with HIV live as long as possible and as healthy as possible … and also to provide educational programs to the community to help try to stem the new infections,” she said.

She said it provides medical care, dental care, medication, transportation to medical appointments, free HIV testing, free STI testing and its biggest program is housing assistance.

“This year, we will be providing almost $120,000 worth of housing assistance to our clients,” she said.

AIDS Resource covers Lycoming, Snyder, Union, Clinton, Centre and Potter counties.  Read more...
