Wellsboro’s 76th Annual Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival

2016 Laurel Festival Parade

Wellsboro’s 76th Annual Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival gets underway with activities for all ages beginning this Saturday, June 10 and continuing through Sunday, June 18.

Kicking off the festival this Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. is Family Day and the Children's Health Fair on The Green, a park located in the heart of downtown Wellsboro. Over 30 businesses and organizations will have booths with information, activities for youngsters and giveaways from pinwheels to gift cards and free bike helmets in sizes toddler to large. Sadie Green Sales and Stitches the Clown will provide entertainment and there will be a bounce house, a 15-foot inflatable slide and slack lines to try.

Those interested in seeing the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and mountain laurel (the state flower and the festival’s namesake) are invited to meet at 2 p.m. this Saturday in front of the Penn Wells Hotel for a Laurel Festival Hike. After a 10-minute drive, hikers will walk along the Bear Run and West Rim trails to Barbour Rock and see awesome views. The path is level. No climbing is required. Bring a camera.

This Sunday, June 11 is the Pet Parade. Children with decorated bicycles and pets of all types from dogs to ducks will gather at 12:25 p.m. at Packer Park behind the Wellsboro Senior Center parking lot on Queen Street for judging. At 1:30 p.m., they will parade from the park up Main Street to the Green where awards will be presented.

Every night, Monday, June 12 through Friday, June 16, will be a free concert with different entertainers.

For the annual Arts & Crafts Fair 98 artisans will be on The Green Friday, June 16 with unique, handcrafted items. The International Street of Foods along Pearl Street will offer a host of delectable delights from strawberry shortcake to Greek gyros.

At noon, the official welcome for the Laurel Queen candidates will be on the steps at the Tioga County Courthouse on Main Street.

Friday night at 5 p.m., the Queen's Preview & Concert will be on the Deane Center's outdoor stage. The 27 Laurel Queen candidates will be introduced with a free concert by Gabe Stillman and the Billtown Giants performing electric blues and R&B tunes.

The Laurel Festival 10K at 9 a.m. and Two-Mile Fun Run at 9:05 a.m. will start Saturday's events. Both will begin at Packer Park on Queen Street.

At 2 p.m., the Laurel Festival Parade, themed “Through the Eyes of a Child” will reach Main Street. Waving to the crowd will be the Laurel Queen candidates from floats crafted by community organizations. Top-notch drum and bugle corps, bagpipers and high school marching bands, the Bucktails Civil War Living History Unit and the Jaffa Shrine Lil Vettes will perform.

Immediately following the parade, Downbeat Percussion, the official drumline of the Buffalo Bills, will give a free concert on The Green.

Jerry Brown and his monkey will do magic and animal tricks free on The Green.

Capping off the day will be the coronation ceremonies during which the 2017 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen will be crowned.

On Sunday, June 18 at 10:30 a.m., the festival will end with the Union Church Service on The Green.
