Friday, Aug. 4 from 5-7 p.m. will be an opening reception for two new exhibits at the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center at 134 Main Street in Wellsboro. There will be refreshments. The reception and both exhibits are open free to the public.
“This Beautiful World” is the title of the Grand Canyon Photography Club’s Eighth Biennial Member Exhibit in the Main Gallery. There are no specific categories for this show. Best of Show and first, second and third place prizes will be awarded.

Cub members were invited to enter up to three photographs each for this juried show. Judges are Molly Cagwin who taught photography at Syracuse University for three years and at Corning Community College for 15 years and Kathy Connery who teaches graphic design, digital art and photography at Corning Community College.

“This Beautiful World” exhibit will remain on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, between Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 24.

Also opening on Aug. 4 will be a new exhibit In the Atrium Gallery titled “Science in Our Daily Lives.” Ten to 15 works, including photography, paintings, found-object sculpture and drawings will be on display from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and 2-5 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays between Saturday, Aug. 5 and Sunday, Aug. 27.

"Science in Our Daily Lives" is the result of an art contest initiated by Hometown Science, a new group that has formed to share locally relevant scientific information, knowledge and tools through a series of free speaker and film events and a Hometown Science Festival on The Green in Wellsboro on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This photograph titled "A Heron's Marsh" by Gary Thompson won "Best of Show" at the Grand Canyon Photography Club member exhibit two years ago. The theme was "One Moment in Time." Thompson took the photo in Sperr Park in Big Flats, New York.
