Penn State Extension To Offer Canning Basics Workshop:

Many people today are interested in growing and/or buying local foods and want to preserve them for use throughout the year. With this in mind, Penn State Extension will offer a course on Home Food Preservation: Canning Basics on Thursday, August 24th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at their office at 7 Water Street in Coudersport.

Canning Basics is an introductory workshop teaching today’s recommendations on how to safely can seasonal garden produce and specialty items. The workshop includes the science behind canning, how to use a pressure canner or boiling water bath canner, types of pack, safe methods and procedures, storage, and resources.

This workshop is designed for beginning canners, as well as those wishing to update their canning knowledge and skills. Up-to-date procedures will be taught and current canners are welcome to bring their pressure canning lid for testing at the end of the class.

The cost is $15.00 per person.

Register by contacting the Penn State Extension office at 274-8540. Class size is limited to 20 people.

Last year Rob C. Gerlach taught canning classes but he moved from Coudersport. His classes were excellent. He still gives private lessons on the internet from Pittsburgh. He used to work in Coudersport and was the guy behind all this dildine frenzy which he left has his legacy here. He is on Facebook if anyone wants to sign up for canning lessons.
