Think About It

Choices
by Pastor B.J. Knefley

Today my wife and I are celebrating our 53rd wedding anniversary. I know, that’s a really long time and I must be really, really old. Let me say first that age is a feeling thing. I don’t feel my age and my children would tell you that I don’t act it either. They don’t like it when I go off on adventures by myself. Funny how no one seemed to have the same concerns when I was 30.

I don’t know how we’ve made it for fifty-three years except that we chose to. About thirty years ago we were in a bad place. In fact, divorce really sounded good. For me, I was just angry and I was done trying. One evening I found myself in a Church service and I was singing a song, “Yes Lord”. The part of the song was, “To your will and your way, I’ll say yes Lord.” I remember singing those words and suddenly I heard or felt a voice that said, “Will you?”. I remember thinking, “Are you kidding me?”. Again I felt this voice say, “You’ve sang that you would do whatever I ask, but will you?”. In that moment I knew exactly what I was being asked to do, reconcile with my wife. Before me was a choice, follow His will, or follow my own. I’d like to say that it was an easy choice, but it was not. But I knew deep in my heart what I needed to choose and so I did. I don’t regret the choice, and we haven’t looked back.

I’ve looked back over the years and thought about the choices that were before me that night. I believe that my children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren have been affected by that choice in a very positive way. I know that my wife and myself have had a much better marriage after making that choice than we ever would have believed was possible. Through it our children learned that forgiveness can and does bring new life if you choose to follow it.

Sometimes life seems to be overwhelming and we feel paralyzed to change. Yet all that it takes, is making a choice and start to walk it out. How do I know? Been there done that. Think about it.
