Bruce Trego has been appointed Acting PA State Fire Commissioner

ANNOUNCEMENT: Mr. Bruce Trego has been appointed Acting State Fire Commissioner.

Mr. Trego has worked in multiple roles at OSFC since 2002, the most recent being Administrator of the PA State Fire Academy in Lewistown. He previously served as Assistant Administrator, Incident Management Team Program Manager, and Homeland Security Training Coordinator.

His affiliation with the PA State Fire Academy began in 1980 when he became a Local Level Instructor and an Adjunct Instructor in 1993. He has been involved in the fire service for over 40 years and has served as Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain and Assistant Chief in the Lewistown Fire Department.

The Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC) is charged with meeting the diverse training, operational, and informational needs of the Commonwealth’s fire and emergency services community. The Commissioner oversees the development and operation of Pennsylvania’s emergency service training program which includes both traditional fire training as well as alternative energy emergency training; the Volunteer Loan Assistance Program (VLAP) that provides low-interest loans to volunteer fire andemergency service organizations; the Fire Company, Emergency Medical Service Grant program (FCEMSGP) that provides grants for volunteer and career fire, ambulance and rescue companies; and the state’s fire safety education program.

In addition, the Commissioner is responsible for the development of a comprehensive fire incident reporting system. The goal of the State Fire Commissioner’s Office is to develop a robust, customer-focused support system for these agencies that includes superior training, innovation in policy and finance, aggressive community education, and free and technologically-sound flows of information.

Central to the Commissioner’s duties is the cultivation of a close working relationship with Pennsylvania’s 2,400 fire departments and their personnel. The Commissioner and his staff function as support and resource personnel for these agencies in dealing with issues such as volunteer recruitment and retention, firefighter safety, intervention programs dealing with juvenile fire-setters, and community safety education.
