The latest news from the State Capitol

Statewide Access to Broadband Internet - In addition to the exhibits, animals and great food, the Pennsylvania Farm Show is a time for members of the agriculture community to come together and discuss issues that are important to them.

One of those issues is access to broadband internet, a key element of our infrastructure that has ramifications for education, medicine and economic development.

Last Thursday, the Pennsylvania State Grange organized a panel discussion on the many aspects of bringing broadband to rural Pennsylvania.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate Forms…..for the 2017 tax year will be available for download from the Department of Revenue’s website starting this Monday, Jan. 22. Paper forms will be available in the coming weeks.

Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid in 2017. The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.

Residents do not need to pay a private entity for assistance in filing the forms. Copies of the forms, as well as assistance with filing them, are available at no cost at my district office(s); however, applicants should be prepared to provide all the necessary income, property tax or rental information required to process claims quickly and accurately. Applications are due by June 30.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is one of many initiatives supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery, which dedicates its proceeds to support programs for older Pennsylvanians.

If you travel on Interstate 80….the restroom and vending machine facilities in the rest areas at mile-marker 144 on I-80 near Snow Shoe, Centre County, are temporarily closed. Vehicles are still permitted to enter the parking lot areas during the closure.

The closures were announced in cooperation with the Mountaintop Regional Water Authority, which has asked customers to conserve due to a supply shortage.

The next rest area westbound will be in Venango County near mile-marker 35. The next eastbound rest area is in Clinton County near mile-marker 194.
