Thompson Issues Statement on Failure of Senate to Keep Federal Government Open

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate failed to approve a short-term funding measure:

“I find it troubling that a majority of the Senate Democrats have chosen to severely jeopardize our military readiness, shut down essential government operations, and eliminate health care coverage for low-income children, while setting an arbitrary deadline to address the DACA issue.

“I maintain that we must achieve comprehensive immigration reform, which includes providing certainty on the status of those brought here as children, but a government shutdown is not the way to achieve this policy goal. I have been working toward a bipartisan agreement to protect the fate of the ‘Dreamers’ and to ensure our borders are secure for the safety of all Americans.

“In accordance with the law, my Bellefonte and Titusville district offices will be closed and many of my staff members will be furloughed for the duration of any budget impasse. I will remain in Washington working to get this impasse resolved. It is my hope that cooler heads will prevail and we can quickly find a resolution to reopen the federal government.”

Uh, DACA and CHIP were ended by Presidential memoranda/executive orders.

Also, there is a Republican in the White House with Republican majorities in both the House and the Senate.

Further of note is the five Republican Senators votes no against the short term spending bill.

The problem isn't with the Democrats attempting to fix a problem that Republicans created, it's that despite majorities in the House and the Senate, they still can't gtebit together long enough to pass meaningful legislation.

To argue otherwise is not only dishonest, it's dangerously partisan and further serves to cause divisions.

Yep, don't place the blame completely on the Dems for something the Republicants and the Deal Maker in Chief couldn't get done.

What about us retired folks who live on our social security checks???This is not right How are we suppose to live?

Cooler heads will prevail??? Does this idiot know the budget was due October 1. He's spent too much time at farm shows and recognizing the trees in the ANF. How about closing your pie hole and do your job??

I'm more concerned about how people will survive without the government holding their hand?
The Government has SHUT DOWN!! How will we survive?
Who is going to help liberals in New York and California cross the street?! Who is going to hold their hand?!!!!! The end is near..........

Several Democrats also sided WITH the Republicans. Smart!

No matter what the state of affairs, You can always count on GT for a Statement though.

Thanks a lot.

I find it interesting that in a government that is led by majority republican in both house and senate and in the whitehouse, the republican party has the audacity to blame the party without any power for their failures.

Seeing what my party is doing (or more importantly not doing) really makes me believe the correct choice for me is to change parties and become a democrat. Seems like if what Mr. Thompson is saying is true, they have to be the better party as they do not have any control over the whitehouse, senate or house, yet are in control of things.

Yet life goes on. Get a life people.

For some yes, for others affected by the short sightedness of those in office, there are very real impacts to their lives as a result of these issues.

Lack of access to healthcare or being returned to countries full of strife being some of those impacts.

It always amazes me when people see how much the government sucks, yet they beg and cry for more of it. If you think a politician will make your life better, you may want to take an assessment of your life.

Tell me 1:06 , how does one have lack of "access to healthcare" due to the shut down?

Everybody raise your hand if you are getting ANY kind of a government benefit?

I have noticed recently every time I see Chuckieo Schumer on TV he has a new pair of glasses.
He seems to keep getting glasses with longer temples on them every other day so they can reach the end of his nose.

While we are on the subject we should stop sending money and food over seas to feed the needy when we have them in our own backyard too and yes the undocumented should be departed

How divided this Country has become because of this President.

It's #TrumpsShutdown He needs to own that since he makes no bipartisan effort to govern.

BTW...Happy Anniversary Donald.

At 1:51 ...
Lack of healthcare isn't because of the shutdown. Part of the proposal is to allow healthcare providers to decide if they want to offer treatment to people who are LGBTQ. See the slippery slope yet?

Most of the "non-essential" workers do things every day to help keep us safe. The Dept of Defense will furlough tens of thousands of support personnel, the troops won't be paid until it's over, and every general from Mattis on down is angry as hell at the way our congress budgets, not just now, but all the time.

I spoke to someone on one of our large bases in Afghanistan today, and the Armed Forces Network that airs football and other programming has been shut down. The troops and civilian support people on all of our overseas bases are blacked out for the football playoffs, and everything else. That might not sound like a big deal, but when you're thousands of miles from home in some shithole country, it's a very big deal indeed.

GT, keep your effing propaganda to yourself. It's real old at this point. I wish people in your district had the balls to vote your sorry ass out of office. Shame on you and all your colleagues. You're so out of touch it's disgraceful.

I am embarrassed to be a Republican. Insurance for poor children and permanent citizenship for immigrants brought here as children should not even be bargaining chips in any negotiation. I am a Republican with a heart. Trump is incapable of empathizing with any unfortunate individuals. And congressional Republicans have been drawn into his un-Christian attitudes. And Trump claims to be a Christian which is sinful...

Thompson has never been able to see above his own party loyalty. He always votes against the better interests of the people in the rural 5th District that he represents. He can neither be trusted nor respected. The shut-down was caused by a bill that was corroded to start with, then made worse by trump and McConnell who played games with it to make democrats look to blame. Sadly, the lives of innocent children and DACA people where held hostage for trump to get a wall that is not needed.

My son wont get his Army paycheck. His entire family are victims to this. Want to pit it into perspective? Bases sitting in limbo with hundreds of thousands of soldiers and their families without a way to live day to day. Supplies not arriving at our foreign bases and no way for our soldiers to protect themselves. Defenses for our country. None. Military hospitals, closed. Veterans, out in the cold. Parks, closed. Civilians who work for our government, idle with no paychecks. Federal student loans, yep I am still paying them, but noone to accept payments. Borders, wide open for terrorists and drug dealers. Democrats, want to protect people who arent even citizens, who are getting free rides in life, while my son doesnt get paid, and my daughter is sitting on $50,000 in student loan debt working her tail off to pay. Mail, wont be getting my paycheck or tax forms. Why is DACA even part of this budget process? Refresh my memory.......why are the dreamers more important than my children or grandchildren? Illegals have destroyed this country's economy thanks to Barack Obama.

I was embarrassed to be a Democrat at one time, that's why I am a Conservative Republican now. And I am proud of that

10:31 you are right on the nail head, Obama really screwed this country up.
