Kerith Strano Taylor Drops Out Of 5th District Congressional Race; To Run For State Office

Kerith Strano Taylor Statement on 2018 Campaign February 23, 2018

We have known since January 22 that there would be new Congressional districts in Pennsylvania by February 19. Pennsylvania’s new Congressional district map is a good map because it is a fair map. The districts that were horribly gerrymandered to favor Republicans are gone, and we look forward to competitive Congressional campaigns across this great Commonwealth.

The new district that contains my home county, Jefferson County, is the fifteenth, and it differs from the old fifth district in some important ways. Erie County is no longer split but it is now entirely within another district. State College and most of its surrounding townships, along with Clinton, Potter, and Tioga Counties have also been taken out of the old district. In their place, Armstrong, Indiana Counties, half of Butler County, and all of Cambria County (except the Johnstown area) have been added.

While it may look similar, this is a very different landscape from the district I have run in before. There was a narrow pathway to victory for me in 2018 in the old fifth district. I do not see that pathway in the new fifteenth district. Instead, I have decided the most effective way for me to fight for distressed rural communities and families is to run for the 66th district seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives this year. The 66th district includes all of Jefferson County and the northern part of Indiana County.

The 66th District seat is currently held by Republican Cris Dush, who is in his second term. On February 5, Mr. Dush called on his fellow members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to impeach the five duly elected members of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court who ruled that the old district map “clearly, plainly, and palpably violates the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.” Mr. Dush argues that by making this finding, the five justices have “engaged in misbehavior in office” constituting grounds for impeachment. While there are a great many things on which I disagree with Mr. Dush, as a lawyer, I find this disrespect for justice beyond the pale. I hope the rest of us can agree that we’re not going to impeach judges every time they make a decision we don’t like!

The next few days will be challenging as we suspend our fifth district U.S. Congressional campaign and start up our 66th district Pennsylvania House campaign. I know that some of my supporters will be disappointed that I am not running for U.S. Congress in 2018. This was not an easy decision, but I am confident that it is the right decision. I am delighted to report that my entire Congressional campaign staff will remain with me. We are now focusing our energies on winning the 66th district seat in the Pennsylvania House. I look forward to this campaign! I hope you will join us in our new fight.

The best way for you to fight for distressed rural communities is to run for the toilet seat. Thats the only seat where you can accomplish anything.
