Carol Rebecca Smith, 69, Deland, Florida; Smethport Native

Carol Rebecca Smith

Carol Rebecca Smith, 69, Deland, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, May 22, in the Halifax Hospice Facility.

She was the cherished wife of Mike, the beloved daughter of George and Charlotte Herzog Dean, the adored sister of Bill, Ed, and Lori, and the special aunt of Craig, Cory, Justin, Zach, Michael, Brian and Matt.

Carol was filled with beauty and grace, but those words only partially describe Bec, as she was known to almost everyone. No description is complete without the word “courageous”, for this strong woman valiantly fought her battle with pancreatic cancer. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Born, Carol Rebecca Dean, November 20, 1948 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of George E. and Charlotte Herzog (Dean). She grew up in Smethport, graduating from Smethport High in 1966. She attended Humboldt Institute for Airline School, where she graduated in 1967.

On October, 18, 1969, she married Michael L. Smith, in the United Christian Church in East Smethport, Pennsylvania. Bec and Mike resided in the beautiful neighborhood of Bay Shore, Long Island, New York until December of 1980.

Bec was employed by TWA Airlines as a Teletype operator, gate and ticketing agent for 32 years. During this time she worked at JFK Airport in NYC, then transferred to Miami, and then to Fort Lauderdale, where she retired in 1999.

Beside her family, her cat Sammie, and all her dogs, Bec had many passions in life. She has been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for years. She and Mike loved to travel in their fifth wheel all across America. Making friends at each RV camp site they visited.

She enjoyed gardening (her Florida friends call her digger”), going fishing, playing at various casinos, bargain hunting, and playing bingo with her mom. She was intrigued with family history, and has her genealogy all the way back to 1798.

In 2003, Bec and Mike started C.R. Sewing, a business making hammer covers for a large international company that makes circus and fair games. She also created dog and cat coats which she would sell at various dog conventions.

She is survived by her husband Mike, mother Charlotte Dean of Smethport, PA; two brothers, William E. Dean of Coral Springs, Florida, and George Edward Dean (Rose) of Smethport, PA. One sister, Lori Smith (Todd) also of Smethport and seven nephews.

Preceding her in death was her father George in 1996 and her brother, James Lester Dean, 1984.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or any hospice facility of your choosing.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Local Arrangements are under the direction of the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport.
