HAMILTON-GIBSON WOMEN'S PROJECT "CHANGE OF SCENERY" SCRIPTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY MAY 22

The Hamilton-Gibson Women's Project is now accepting scripts for original short plays and adaptations of existing short plays or scenes from classic films, plays, and books in the public domain and not subject to copyright. The focus this year is on gender.

Scripts submitted by the Tuesday, May 22 deadline will be considered for the "Change of Scenery" production with auditions set for August and performances for Oct. 18-21 at the Warehouse Theatre in Wellsboro.

Lilace Guignard and Linda Iseri are "Change of Scenery" co-producers. "We are hoping for many submissions," said Guignard. "Women can submit scripts even if they did not participate in the workshops or read-arounds. We encourage anyone with an idea or a draft to discuss it with one of us before submitting it. We will be glad to answer any questions or help in any way we can," Guignard said.

Nineteen women participated at least once in either the two free workshops led by Guignard in February or the four free read-arounds led by Iseri in March and April. "The idea was to look at how women have been portrayed in theatre and what roles have and have not been available to them, as well as what types of stories,” said Guignard. In response to what they learned, the women were asked to write original works or adaptations of short plays or scenes "to shake things up a bit from a woman’s perspective," she said.

"During the workshops and read-arounds, many different approaches have been shared with us," said Guignard. Some participants are adapting a classic scene from Shakespeare by using a single gender cast or swapping genders. Some are doing a mash-up of familiar stories such as fairy tales with a bit of contemporary context. Others are presenting gender roles in a way that gives the audience a different perspective. "All the scripts shared so far by participants have been funny, smart and thought-provoking."

A female director-playwright can submit more than one script. Two copies of each script along with a cover letter briefly describing the ways in which that script incorporates questions, assumptions, or issues concerning gender must be mailed by May 22 to Hamilton-Gibson Productions, Attention "Change of Scenery," 29 Water Street, Wellsboro, PA 16901. Director-playwrights are also asked to include in the cover letter for each script they submit their telephone numbers and email addresses as well as the name of the director of that play or scene if the director is not the person who wrote the script.

Entries postmarked after May 22 will not be accepted. Short plays and scenes must be no longer than 15 minutes in length, original, unpublished, not previously produced and appropriate for a venue that can handle a minimal set, basic lighting and sound effects.

The submitted scripts will be read and those that create a cohesive, well-balanced "Change of Scenery" production will be selected. All playwrights will be notified by email or phone. This is not a contest. No prizes will be awarded.
