JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH AUDITIONS ARE MAY 22, 23 AND 24

Open auditions for Hamilton-Gibson's summer musical, "James and the Giant Peach" will be at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 22, 23, and 24 in the Warehouse Theatre at at 3 Central Avenue in Wellsboro. Director is Thomas Putnam.

This musical fantasy is about an orphaned British boy, his friendly talking insect friends and their amazing journey on a giant piece of fruit across the ocean to New York City.

It is an adaptation of Roald Dah's children's book of the same name by playwright Timothy Allen McDonald with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Male and female singers, high school age to adults, are encouraged to audition for the main roles and a small ensemble.

The main character is James, a lonely young boy who lacks confidence. To be cast will be a male actor, seven to 15 years old with a vocal range of G3 to G5. Having lost both his parents in a freak accident, James feels he belongs nowhere in the world. Given the right encouragement he becomes resourceful, innovative and a good friend.

Ladahlord, a strange, magical storyteller who often inserts himself into the story, in disguise. To be cast is a male, 25 to 55 years old with a vocal range of Bb2 to A4.

Spiker and Sponge are James' two mean aunts. Both women are thieves and scoundrels. Spiker is shrewd and opportunistic, very tall and thin. Sponge is not nearly as bright as her sister, is overweight and often has her mind on food. To be cast for these roles are two females age 30 to 60 with a vocal range of F3 to E5.

All five insect characters, Spider, Green Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybug and Earth Worm are human-sized because they ate crocodile tongue.

Three actors 20 to 40 years of age will be cast to play the first three insects. The vocal range of the female who plays Spider is G3 to E5. Green Grasshopper is wizened, an excellent musician and has his eye on Ladybug. His vocal range is C3 to G4. Centipede is ornery, prickly, rude and hates humans. His vocal range is also C3 to G4.

Ladybug is motherly, respectable and classy, has a warm, caring heart and has her eye on Grasshopper. To be cast in this role is a female, age 30 to 60 with a vocal range of G3 to E5.

Earthworm is neurotic and worries about everything, is a bit of a scaredy-cat but is very friendly and brave when called upon. A male actor, age 25 to 50 with a vocal range of C2 to A4 will be cast in this role.

The small ensemble made up of both male and female singers high school age to adults who can also move will play a number of different roles during the show including Reporters, Vagrants, Garden Guild members, Bobby-Cops, Oompa Loompas, Hollywood Agents, Seagulls and New Yorkers.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, July 27 and 28 and Aug. 3 and 4 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 29 in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.
