COVINTON, PA - On Wednesday, July 18, 2018, Blossburg fire, ambulance and Blossburg Borough Police responded to a vehicle verses pedestrian accident just before 2:00PM in Putnam Township.

The accident involved a street sweeper backing up and striking 72-year-old, Lloyd R. Byers of Manheim, PA., in front of the Treasure Chest, which is located at 2210 North Williamson Road, in the small town of Covington, PA.

According to Blossburg Borough Police, at the time of the incident, the northbound lane of North Williamson Road was closed due to a road resurfacing project taking place. Byers entered the closed portion of the roadway to look at the construction taking place and was accidently struck by the street sweeper while it was backing up. Byers was subsequently knocked to the ground and struck his head. He was transported by the Blossburg Ambulance to a landing zone set up at the old Covington School. Life Flight 4 landed in a field by the old school around 2:45PM and Byers was loaded into the medical helicopter around 3:00PM and was flown to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA.

Blossburg Borough Police reported that Lloyd R. Byers later passed away that evening at the hospital due to his injuries. Police noted that the incident has been ruled accidental.

Prayers have been requested for Byers family and friends, as well as, for the person who was operating the street sweeper.

Special thanks going out to all the Blossburg Borough Police, Blossburg fire crews and the Blossburg ambulance personnel, who assisted at the accident scene.
