State Grant to Boost Engineering, Technology Opportunities at Pitt Bradford

A $2 million grant was awarded to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this week to support the development of facilities for engineering and technology programs at the campus.

Sen. Joe Scarnati and I have been working in support of this project for a number of years, as area manufacturers and other employers have consistently expressed a need for engineers to support their operations, and university officials have been working to fill that need.

This project has the potential to breathe new life into our local economy. It gives area students the opportunity to pursue rapidly growing career fields, especially in engineering and information systems, and it gives local employers peace of mind that a supply of highly trained and qualified workers will be available to meet their needs. This is certainly a win-win for northwest and northcentral Pennsylvania.

The grant funding will be used toward the development of a building to house engineering labs, engineering shops, computer labs, and other specialized spaces to support new programs meeting local needs, along with classrooms, offices and storage space.

I applaud university officials for their commitment to our campus and community.

Honoring Commander Philip F. “Jet” Palmatier

It was an honor to take part in a wonderful tribute to Commander Philip F. “Jet” Palmatier last weekend. Members of his family, area veterans and neighbors gathered at the bridge on Avenue A in Coudersport that now bears his name.

Commander Palmatier graduated high school with honors and was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. A career Navy officer, he was flying a training mission over the Gulf of Mexico when his TA-4 Skyhawk collided with another jet on Dec. 10, 1990. He died at the age of 40.

Thank you to American Legion Post 192 for organizing the ceremony.
