The McKean County Conservation District, in cooperation with the Pennsylvania State Conservation Commission, Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies, and Penn State Extension, are sponsoring a day-long workshop for anyone who maintains unpaved roads. The course will present innovative and effective practices to reduce maintenance costs and sediment pollution from unpaved roads. Focus topics will include a presentation on many ESM Best Management Practices, and Invasive Plant Control/Identification. Other topics will include roadside vegetation management, roadside banks, road & stream interfaces, ditch outlets, driving surface aggregate, road surface maintenance and drainage, and additional maintenance techniques. These practices protect streams from erosion and sedimentation that originate from unpaved roads. Course includes an afternoon field session.

The course will be held on Thursday, September 13th at the St. Elizabeth Church in Smethport from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is no cost to attend. Professional credits are available, including PA Sustainable Forestry Initiative, CEUs and PDHs through College of Engineering, Penn State, and Pesticide Applicator License update credits (pending core and category 10). This training will be beneficial to municipalities applying for Dirt, Gravel, and Low Volume Road funds, personnel from timber operations, oil & gas companies, landowner associations, and state or national forest staff. There will also be an opportunity for questions and answers with expert speakers. Please pre-register for the course by Sept. 6 by calling the McKean County Conservation District at (814) 887-4001 or by email to

Please stop the disposal of frackwater all over our backroads. It isn't safe for man nor beast. If I dumped something as toxic as frack water, I'd be arrested(and rightly so)
