Christmas House volunteers are making plans for their Open House.

On Thursday, November 15, they will welcome the public to their new location in the basement of First Presbyterian Church at 402 N. Main Street in Coudersport.

“Our annual open house has been a tradition since Christmas House was founded by Alyce Reese. She looked forward each year to welcoming visitors and supporters to share in the holiday spirit,” says Charlene Smith, who has taken on many of the responsibilities Alyce shouldered over the years.

“We're excited to show folks around our new larger location. We’re serving our famous broccoli-cheese soup, chili, sandwiches and desserts from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All are welcome to stop in to learn more about the Christmas House mission. Santa Claus will be on hand from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. to greet children. Don’t forget to bring a camera!” Smith says.

Through the generosity of many donors, Christmas House provides Christmas gifts free of charge to Potter County children in need. Referrals are made by school nurses, social service agencies, churches and individuals. In addition, Christmas House assists people in paying overdue rent and utilities and with emergency food needs all year.

“Without the generous donations each year, we would not be able to brighten the holidays for families who depend on us. In addition to cash donations, we can always use donations of new, unwrapped toys and this year we have need for gifts for boys of all ages as well as infants.”

“All our volunteers are proud to continue to carry on the legacies of the many who have given their time and resources over the years,” says Smith.

The new location is at the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in Coudersport. Parking is available on Fourth Street and signs direct people around the side of the building. Access to the basement is adjacent to the Sitler Memorial Garden on the north side of the church. An elevator is also available for those who have difficulties with stairs.

“We want to remind everyone that the deadline for sign-ups for the Christmas gifts is November 12 to allow volunteers ample time to prepare the gifts or distribution. Please call 274-0825 for additional information,” Smith concludes.
