Nancy A. Lesser, 88, Ridgway, PA

Nancy A. Lesser

Nancy A. Lesser, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Elk Haven Nursing Home surrounded by her family.

Nancy was born on June 17, 1930, in Meadville, PA. She was the daughter of the late DeWitt C. Rust and Florence Burns Rust. On July 6, 1957, she married Gerald J. Lesser, who preceded her in death on November 18, 1996.

After graduating from Cambridge Springs High School, she attended Edinboro State Teachers College and graduated from The Pennsylvania State University. Nancy began her teaching career in the Ford City School District teaching Health and Physical Education. She then taught in the Ridgway Area School District for 11 full years. She was a reliable substitute teacher covering many educational subject areas. Both teachers and students would often say that Mrs. Lesser was the “super” sub. As a substitute teacher, she was dedicated and provided the students with continuity in their subjects.

Nancy was an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Throughout the years, she served on the church council, the mutual ministry, the finance committee and the altar guild. She taught vacation bible school and often assisted with church dinners.

Nancy thoroughly enjoyed her grandchildren and made every effort to attend their events. Nancy’s passion was gardening. She especially enjoyed the spring and summer flowers and the foliage in the fall. She and her husband Jerry had many beautiful flower gardens that adorned their property. It was Nancy’s desire to have flowers in bloom from the crocus in the spring to the mums in the fall. Nancy took great pride in sharing her flowers with others in the community. Nancy also enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and cross country skiing and biking on the Rails to Trails. Nancy was also an avid Penn State alumnus. She and her family attended and supported the Penn State athletic programs.

Nancy is survived by her children: Kirk (Marilyn) Lesser of York, PA, Sharon (Robert) Marnatti of Ridgway, PA and Stephanie Lesser of York, PA; her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Carl Marnatti of Ridgway, PA, Kevin Marnatti of Erie, PA, Douglas (Melissa) Lesser of Swedesboro, NJ and their 3 boys Keaton, Bryson and Coleton, and Erica (Devin) Gerhart of Fallston, MD and their 2 children, Brooklyn and Reed. Nancy is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert C. Rust and a sister, Mariam (Rust) Long.

Funeral and committal services for Nancy A. Lesser will be held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 11:00 am. Officiating will be Rev. Susan Fox, Pastor of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Thayer Memorial Cemetery.

Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Sunday from 6-8 pm. Memorials, if desired, can be made to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or Ridgway Ambulance Service.
