Port Allegany High School "Chamber Choir" to perform at Carnegie Hall in NYC on January 20th

The Port Allegany High School Music Department is proud to announce that the Port Allegany Chamber Choir is one of eight select choirs invited to perform at Carnegie Hall on January 20, 2019. The concert, entitled “Every Life Shall Be A Song” featuring the works of women composers and lyricists is the 13th annual choral invitational presented by Performing Arts Educators. Each invited choir will perform its own segment of the program and the combined choirs will perform the finale “Every Life Shall Be A Song” by visiting composer Gwyneth Walker (featuring piano, brass, and percussion) under the direction of artistic director Dr. Peggy Dettwiler of Mansfield University.

The Port Allegany High School Chamber Choir is a 49-voice ensemble, under the direction of Kenneth J. Myers is comprised of auditioned students in grades 9-12. This invitation marks the third time the PAHS Chamber Choir has been invited to perform in the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall (2015 and 2017).

The PAHS ensemble will present a challenging acapella program featuring a setting of the Latin text “Gloria In Excelsis” by Eleanor Daley, followed by an arrangement of “Thulele Mama Ya” by Australian composer Lisa Young (of the award-winning vocal group CoCo’s Lunch). Next the choir will perform Susan LaBarr’s lovely setting of the poet Sara Teasdale’s “Grace Before Sleep” followed by a contemporary arrangement of “Nearer, My God, To Thee” by Sara Adams, Lowell Mason and James Stevens (made popular by BYU Vocal Point).

Tickets are now on sale for this event. All tickets are reserved seats and will be distributed on a “first come/first served” basis. Tickets are $45.00 and payment may be cash or check (payable to “Port Allegany High School”). If you would like to purchase tickets, please refer to the Port Allegany School District website or contact Ken Myers at Port Allegany High School. Additionally, the Port Allegany Music Boosters are sponsoring a bus to NYC on Sunday, January 20th. You can purchase your reserved seating at Carnegie Hall and your seat on the motorcoach in one simple transaction!
