OLEAN---Viola C. “Vi” Shaw, 96, of Olean, NY and a former longtime resident of Bolivar, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 13, 2018, in Wellsville Manor, Wellsville, after a short illness.
Born on February 20, 1922 in Uniontown, PA, she was a daughter of Alfred and Rita Johnston Chain. On April 29, 1945, in the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Shinglehouse, Pa., she married the love of her life, John H. Shaw, who passed away on March 5, 2017.
Vi grew up in Shinglehouse and Franklinville, where her parents started Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches, including the church she was married in and was a member of for many years. Vi enjoyed playing the piano at church and at home for her family. She enjoyed being a homemaker and enjoyed babysitting many of the neighborhood children. Her greatest love was spending time with her children and grandchildren, for whom she prayed for daily.
Surviving are three children, John (Cheryl) Shaw of Munford, Tennessee, Nancy (Ron) Moreci of Chandler, Arizona, and Richard “Rick” (Diana) Shaw of Olean; eight grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Alice Walker of Wellsville; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Shaw was predeceased by her parents and husband.
Friends may call from 11am to 1pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will follow at 1pm with Pastor Larry Allen of the Richburg First Day Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Vi’s name may be made to Cattaraugus County Office of the Aging, 1 Leo Moss Drive, Olean, NY 14760.

Former Potter County Leader-Enterprise editor Donald Gilliland has accepted a position as Contributors Editor (Opinions) with "The Hill" in Washington, DC.
Don has worked for the Patriot News in Harrisburg, The Tribune and the Post Gazette in Pittsburgh and now moves up the ladder to "The Hill".
Donald is a Potter County native and an excellent journalist and teacher.

Anthony A. "Tony" Pirman, 83, of 420 Willow Street, Johnsonburg, PA died Thursday evening, July 12, 2018, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born on Sept. 26, 1934, in Johnsonburg, son of Joseph and Angela Rote Pirman, and resided in Johnsonburg all his life.
He graduated Johnsonburg High School in 1953.
Tony was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Central Hose Co., Prince of Piedemont Club, and he had been a member of the Johnsonburg Moose.
He was an avid baseball fan and loved to play baseball.
He had been employed by Willamette, Inc., Johnsonburg Mill, retiring in 1994 after 39 years of service.
Tony is survived by his longtime friend of over 25 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Kelly; a sister, Angeline, Mrs. Joseph Wolfe, of Kane; and his longtime caregiver and nephew, Louis Roebuck; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, Joseph Pitrman, and a sister, Anne Roebuck.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Anthony A. Pirman will be conducted at the Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, on Friday, July 20, 2018, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor, officiating.
Interment will be held at the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut Street, Johnsonburg, Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.

Arleta D. BUTLER, 98, formerly of Genesee, PA, died Friday, July 13, 2018 in Absolut at Houghton, Houghton, NY.
Born July 26, 1919, in Westfield, she was the daughter of Leon and Maude Thompson Dunham. On December 15, 1934, in Troupsburg, NY, she married Arnold T. Butler, who predeceased in her in 1988.
She owned and operated Butler’s Fabric Shop in Genesee for many years. Arleta served as Justice of the Peace for six years, a notary for 35 years, and was a longtime member of the Genesee Township Board of Elections.
She helped found the Genesee Area Library and was a member of the Genesee United Methodist Church.
Surviving are: two daughters, Carol (Stephen) Rukes of Rosedale, IN and Janet (Wayne) Erway of Genesee; five grandchildren, Bruce (Charity) Ordway of Troy, OH, Susan (Greg) Ralyea of Angelica, NY, Marie (Steve) Ackley of Wellsville, NY, Judy (Phil) May of Wellsville, NY, and Charles (Michele) Erway of Genesee; nine great-grandchildren, Michele (Eric) Selwyn, Philip (Sara) Ordway, Dustina (Wyatt) Schroeder, Jessica May, Alan (Athena) Ackley, Clifton Erway, Raymond Erway, Tristan Erway, and Evan Erway; six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara White of Harrison Valley; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Marleta Ordway; three brothers, Roy Dunham, Basil Dunham, and Pearl Dunham; and two sisters, Iva Lawrence and Flora Bollock.

A Rabies Clinic will be held Saturday, July 14th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Shinglehouse Park Gazebo.
All dogs, cats, and ferrets that are at least 12 weeks old can be vaccinated against the rabies virus. The first time a dog or cat receives a vaccine, it is good for one year. Each time after that, the vaccination is good for three years. Ferrets must be vaccinated annually.
All animals attending the clinic must be on a leash or in a container. Cost is $5.00 per animal. The clinic is sponsored by Dr. Lindsay Schwartzmeyer of the Potter County Veterinary Clinic, LLC.

In light of several recent vehicle-pedestrian collisions within the Borough, the Wellsboro Police Department would like to remind everyone about important safety points regarding traveling within the Borough:
As dictated in the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code and the Borough Code of Ordinances, pedestrians crossing at intersections controlled by pedestrian-control signals MUST use those signals to cross the street.
Pedestrians MUST cross within crosswalks and use the appropriate control signals in order to have the right-of-way.
Motorists and pedestrians, please be watchful of other people while driving and walking. This is a busy time of year for our community.
SLOW DOWN, especially in the business district.
AVOID DISTRACTIONS, such as using your cell phone while walking and/or driving.
