Wolf Administration Announces State Investment to Protect Streambanks in McKean County

Harrisburg, PA - The Wolf Administration today announced grant funding to install tens of thousands of feet of streambank fencing in McKean County. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded a grant of $400,000 to the McKean County Conservation District.

Streambank fencing is a great way to reduce erosion and prevent pollution from entering our waterways,” said DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell. “These projects will improve water quality in several watersheds throughout McKean County.”

This 2019 Growing Greener grant will be used to install more than 22,500 feet of streambank fencing, stabilize 8,000 feet of streambank in danger of erosion, and establish eight acres of riparian buffers across ten farms in the county.

One of the largest investments into Pennsylvania’s environment, Growing Greener projects have been instrumental in cleaning up abandoned mine lands, preserving farmland, and protecting and restoring watersheds throughout the commonwealth.

The Growing Greener grant program is supported by the Environmental Stewardship Fund, which receives its funding from landfill tipping fees.

Christmas Eve flight destined for Bradford had fortunate ending

By KATE DAY SAGER,
Olean Times Herald

BRADFORD, Pa. — As Bradford and surrounding communities were enjoying Christmas Eve, Leah Costik was holding a flashlight in the cockpit of a darkened Southern Airways Express airplane ready to help the pilot fly to a scheduled landing at Bradford Regional Airport.

As it turned out, the airplane, which lost its electrical power, was diverted and Costik and another passenger on board the small Cessna Caravan 208 landed safely at Erie International Airport. Contrary to earlier reports, the Cessna was a commercial flight of Southern Airways Express, not a private plane.

While Southern Airways Express officials say the plane’s diversion to Erie from Bradford was due to poor weather — and commonplace with many airports — Costik and her family believe the incident involving a passenger ready to light a cockpit control panel with a flashlight was anything but commonplace. Costik later noted the pilot was also holding a flashlight on the controls, but needed her for emergency backup with her flashlight.  Read more...

THINK ABOUT IT!!

Everybody Hurts
by
Pastor B.J. Knefley

Christmas is over and now we wait for New Years. The time in between these holidays can be a great time of reflection. We have the opportunity to reflect over the events of the past year and the hopes and plans for the future. We can’t change many aspects of life but we can change how we react and respond. In case you haven’t noticed everybody hurts. There isn’t anyone that doesn’t experience death, disappointment, life change or tremendous struggles. It isn’t so much about what, but how. How does one traverse the journey?

Perhaps the first thing we each have to remember is that we’re not alone. Remember that event that crushed you? Someone else has gone or is going through the same thing and has had a complete loss of hope. Your journey has value in the lives of others. I believe it starts with our own willingness to tell our story. Not as a complaint, or to air our anger and poor me stories but rather in a way that describes your journey through the storm. Remember, everybody hurts and it may just be your story that helps them through the darkness.

I don’t have all the answers of life. There is so much I do not understand. Life happens while we’re making other plans, and although I may not always like it, it’s reality. As much I want to be in control, I’m not. I, like everyone else has to deal with disappointment, fear, the unknown, sickness and even death. My time left on earth is less than the amount I’ve spend here. I must ask the question, “What am I leaving behind?” For me that’s an important question. I believe that life is greater than just us. We have a purpose, and that purpose is not about how much we can earn, or own. It’s not about our careers or our hobbies. It’s about others. That person who’s looking for love will probably die looking. That person who’s trying to enjoy that one last pleasure will still die without realizing what they’ve hoped to obtain. The bottom line is that everybody hurts and our hope is in caring and loving others. Perhaps it’s time to start using your hurts for helping others before it’s too late. Think about it.
