The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, featuring 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors. The show runs January 5 – 12, 2019. Admission is free and parking is $15 in Farm Show lots. The Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center is easily accessible from Interstates 81 and 83.

Benjamin M. Potter

Benjamin M. Potter, age 80, of Westfield, PA, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA. 

Born September 25, 1938 in Blossburg, he was the son of the late Clifford and Ellen (Burdick) Potter. He married Phyllis C. Taft, they shared 59 years together and raised two sons. 

He worked for the Westfield Tannery for 36 years. 

 Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Julaine A. Owlett, 62, passed away on November 9th, 2018 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

Born on August 28th, 1956 in Nelson, Pennsylvania she is the daughter of the late Harold and Patricia Owlett. 

Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday January 10th, 2018 at the United Church of Nelson from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM. 

There will be a memorial service held immediately following at 2:00 PM with the Reverend Dorothy Densmore officiating. Interment will be at Nelson Cemetery. (

Ralph J. Volante, 91, Westfield, PA


Ralph J. Volante, 91, passed away Tuesday January 1st, 2019 at his home in Westfield Pennsylvania. 

Born on July 2nd, 1927 in Penn Yan, NY, he is the son of the late Anthony and Sunda (Paciulli) Volante. 
US Marines

He enlisted in the Marines in 1945 and when he was discharged from the service he worked as a manager for the North Penn Gas Company. 

He is survived by his loving wife Roberta (Weaver) Volante, son Ralph “Skip” (Denise) Volante of Cranbury, NJ, daughter Sharon Volante of Sayre, Pa, grandchildren Jeffrey and Kayla Volante of Cranbury, NJ, brother in law and sister in law James and Patricia Weaver of Conklin, NY, along with several nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by brothers, Paul (Lee) and Anthony Volante Jr., Brother in law Stanley “Bud” Weaver, sister in law and brother in law Peter and Joan Schram and nephew David Schram. 

A funeral mass will be held at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Westfield on Monday January 14, 2019 at 11:00 AM with Fr. David Bechtel officiating.

Richard Earl Durst, 73, of Coudersport, PA

“beloved husband, father and grandfather”

Richard Earl Durst, 73, of Coudersport, PA, passed away with his loving family by his side on Thursday, January 3, 2019, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, after a short battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia with complications.

Born on February 7, 1945 in Port Allegany, he was a son of William and Anna Denning Durst. On August 27, 1966 in Buffalo, N.Y., he married Judith E. “Judy” Tangelder, who survives.
US Army Veteran

Richard graduated from Coudersport Jr/Sr High School, Class of 1963. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1966 as an aircraft mechanic, serving in Germany for 2 ½ years. 
Following his military service, Richard was employed at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls, N.Y. and by National Gypsum in Depew, N.Y. After returning to the Coudersport area, he was employed by the Tannery in Coudersport and by the former Pure Carbon in Coudersport. He was a self-employed logger and also was employed in the maintenance department at Charles Cole Hospital in Coudersport for 25 years.

Richard was a member of Coudersport American Legion Post 192 and a life member of the NRA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, anything to do with history and in the past, spending time with his chocolate lab, Rooster. He built his own home. He loved to feed the deer in the winter and the birds in the summer, but his greatest love was spending time with his family.

Surviving besides his wife of 52 years are three children, Jenny L. (Jay) Bright of Coudersport and twins, Robin M. (Joseph) Moyer of Greensburg and William T. “Bill” (Hannah) Durst of Nelson; seven grandchildren, Jordan L. Bright, James A. Bright, Joseph L. Moyer, Tristan N. Moyer, Grey A. Moyer, Emma A. Durst, and Ella E. Durst; a brother, David A. (Mary) Durst of Coudersport; a half-brother, Stephen (Wanda) Kelly of Coudersport; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by two half-brothers, Eugene Kelly and Robert Kelly.

Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the Coudersport American Legion where a celebration of Richard’s life will follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Campbell, pastor of St. Eulalia Catholic Church, officiating.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors following the celebration.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard’s name may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Richard’s family has entrusted his care to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.

Raymond M. SHUTT

Raymond M. SHUTT, 87, of Genesee, PA, died Friday, January 4, 2019 in his home. 

Korean war veteran
Born May 23, 1931, in Bingham Township, PA, he was the son of Clyde and Ruby A. “Peg” Baker Shutt. 

A 1948 graduate of Ulysses High School, he enlisted with the US Army on June 28, 1951 and served honorably during the Korean War, discharged as a Sergeant on March 27, 1954. 

Mr. Shutt owned and operated a television sales and repair business for 25 years and was rural mail carrier with the US Postal Service in Loganton, PA for 16 years. He was a member of the DAV and the NRA. 

Surviving are: ten children, Paul Douglas Shutt of Phoenix, AZ, Raymond Shutt, Jr. of Zephyr Hills, FL, Rhonda Jean Goodell of Germany, Karen M. Shutt of NC, Mary Lee Brewer of IL, Judy Fisher of Lock Haven, Rodger Shutt of Germany, Sandi Shutt of Coudersport, Sherri King of Eldred, and Katherine Suzanne Shutt of ME; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and former wife, Daisy Elliott of Genesee. 

He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister. 

 There will be no visitation or service. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery. 

 Memorials may be made to the Patterson Cancer Center, c/o UPMC Cole, 1001 E. Second St., Coudersport, PA 16915.
