First Presbyterian and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church of Galeton, 2-10-19

by Martha Pennell,

Women’s Bible study featuring “The Shunammite Women” will be held Wednesday, February 20th, at 3 pm at Saint Paul’s Lutheran church.

Galeton Food Pantry opens there at 10 am Friday, February 22nd.

Pastor Sherry’s message was based on Luke 5: 1-11.

She told us there are two things to discover in this scripture, Peter’s response to Jesus, and recognizing Jesus working alongside of the fishermen. Jesus was on the shore followed by many people, but their closeness prevented him from teaching or speaking. So, he got into Peter’s boat to preach to them.

Peter knew Jesus because he had healed his mother-in-law in Capernaum.

When he instructed Peter to go into deeper water, they had already been there and there were no fish. “If you say so, I will let down the nets,” Peter answered.

Pastor Sherry believes Jesus rolled up his sleeves and worked alongside the fishermen. They put the boats on shore and decided to follow him. What is the take away? The men were about to sink but worked together; coming to know and trust Jesus. His working beside them created a bind. We can know Jesus, but have we experienced him working with us when we think our boat is going to sink?

Pastor Sherry explained Jesus wants each of us to have a time when we have his complete attention and keep doing what we do with him working alongside us. “If you say so” are words saying, “I trust you.” In today’s culture the norm is do not get involved. Is our response to Jesus, “If you say so?” It is the response that will fill us up and give us satisfaction.

Live side by side with Jesus!
