Putting Others First
Pastor B.J. Knefley

We live in an interesting world. Interesting in that it has changed a lot and seems to continue to change with each passing day. There was a time when men opened doors for women and people said please and thank you. Being considerate of others seemed to be the norm. But things seem to have changed as more and more we find that people put themselves first above others.

Jesus said 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Matthew 22:37-39 (NLT). Essentially this relates to putting others first, so why is it so hard to do? Perhaps that isn’t even the question to be asked. Maybe it’s why don’t we do it? How have we moved from a society that looked out for others, to one that only looks out for oneself? Please don’t misunderstand me; I know that in times of crisis people come through and can be very generous even sacrificial, but I’m referring to the day to day experience.

To give you a little example of what I am referring to let me share a story. A friend of mine, who has a cute little garden in their back yard, had a neighbor come over and complain. It seemed that the neighbor’s wife didn’t like the way that it looked from her window and sent her husband over to complain about it. Seems silly doesn’t it, but the sad thing is, it actually happened. My friend politely refused any request to change their garden. I suppose this type of stuff comes from and attitude of self-importance. Somehow people feel entitled and this entitlement leads to all sorts of assumptions, many of which are wrong. Have you ever considered that if your starting point is wrong then your ending point will be also? When a person thinks that they are the most important thing in the world, then everything else will take second place. But Jesus clearly stated that we should love God first, then our neighbor just as we would love ourselves. The order seems quite clear doesn’t it? We’re last. Think about it.

All you have to do is look at what comes out of the mouth of Trump to see a large part of the problem add in the echo chamber of Fox News and right-wing radio hosts like Rush Limbaugh to understand what has gone wrong with this nation. Their message is one of hate, racism and out right lies and is aimed at anyone who disagrees with that message. Plus the hate directed at our LBGT citizen by right-wing Christians. This is why America has turned from the real message of Christ. The message of love and compassion is drowned out by their message of hate.!! It is easy to hate to love requires learning the truth and understanding our fellow citizens that is to much like work for far to many of our fellow citizens.
