MUDSKIPPERS CONCERT IS THURSDAY, JUNE 6

Pictured are the Mudskippers (from left to right) Dan Klingsberg on upright bass, Ethan Hawkins on guitar, Ethan Setiawan on mandolin and Avery Merritt on violin.
The Mudskippers will perform in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6. The doors will open at 6:45 p.m.

Hailing from Boston, this four-member acoustic band embodies New England-style grass, modern songwriting and a respect for bluegrass and old-time traditions. Living in the hotbed of progressive folk that produced Joy Kills Sorrow, Crooked Still and the Deadly Gentlemen, the Mudskippers carry the torch with heavy grooves, entrapping lyricism and heartfelt composition that push the envelope of modern acoustic music while keeping sight of the traditions and style that built and define it.

The band was formed in April of 2018 and has been playing together for just over a year. "The four of us are members of the active bluegrass/roots music community around Boston, a group that really digs playing together," said Setiawan.

The Mudskippers features the collective talents of lead singer Ethan Hawkins on guitar, 2014 National Mandolin Champion Ethan Setiawan on mandolin, bass phenomenon Dan Klingsberg on upright bass and award-winning fiddler Avery Merritt on violin.

Hawkins is the main songwriter. Each band member contributes tunes and co-writes. The band will play some of Hawkins' originals, such as "Taking Her Away" and "Mashed Potato Heart," and cover tunes, such as "Mountain Annie," originally by Fruition.

“The mudskippers are a group of young, energetic and extremely talented musicians that have formed a tight and cohesive band," said Aubrey Irion, a member of the Cherry Flats Ridge Pluckers and a friend of the band. "You should go see them before they’re famous," he added.

This is a BYOB event. Audience members are invited to bring their favorite snacks and beverages and reserve a table at no extra charge. Admission is $15. For tickets and a table, call 570-724-6220 or visit www.deanecenter.com.
